Friend of mine has a Massy 1035 she has owned for about 20 years. Tractor has been trouble free. Earlier this year she had to replace the water pump/fan belt. The tractor has shredded the last two she has installed.

The original was stated to ride down in the pulley grooves. The replacements ride higher. The replacements are India made.

I'm thinking the replacements have a different pitch than the pulleys causing the severe wear. I have not been able to put eyes on this myself.

Two dealers have stated the belt she has been getting is correct. She has also looked on line and gets the same replacement number.

Any Ideas?

I've found the Dayco Gator back type of belts can make up for pulley problems.

Every belt my Dealer put on my then new truck would twist and rotate.

Put on a made in USA Dayco belt in 1985 and no more problems.

Many of the imported belts are just cheap...

Does she still have the original belt?

Many times parts numbers get messed up. Someone who knows very little about tractors decides that its a 1000 series MF the belts must fit all of them and the part number in the system gets changed.

One of the pulleys is slightly out of alignment or has a wobble from a bad bearing perhaps. My father in law had a massey the bearings in the alternator were shot allowing the pulley to vibrate and kill belts. Beyond that the alternator was fine. With the belt off, feel each pulley and ensure there is no play or wobble. I would also inspect for knicks and bends throughout the circumference of each of the pulleys as well. Another gentleman I know somehow ended up with a chunk of the back side of one of his pulleys broken out and on each rotation of the engine the bad spot would cut against the belt.

Make sure the pulleys are alligned.

Second that. I'm betting something got put back together with a pulley reversed or spacer/washer on the wrong side of a pulley.

Thanks for all the input.

I have told her to check alignment and she says it looks good. I will have her check the alternator and look into the Dayco belt.

I'd like to go and have a look myself, but it is a 50 mile round trip and my schedule just does not have a spot to fit it in.

She told me today she is thinking about trading it on a Kubota MX 5100, so maybe this will be a mute point!
