Tractor
Massey 135
Previous owner said it didn't have power steering, but found it has all the components. Just not working. The system is the one that has the pressure lines going up to the steering column. Topped up the pump with ATF and with it running I can see the fluid swirling in there through the fill hole, so the gear is turning. Just has no power assist. Tractor is 1969 deisel. Where to start?

Thanks
Mark in Canada eh.

i had a MF135 diesel without PS. But, you could get a service/shop manual from ebay. i did a search and they have them. Very good tractors!!

The 135 has "power assisted steering" that uses a dinky hydraulic actuator on the steering column. True power steering has a larger hydraulic ram (cylinder) built into the steering assembly on the front axle. Sounds like the hydraulic pump on the right side front of the engine needs service/repair. Also disconnect the hoses and check for clogs.

Good luck.

pm me with email address and can send you the pdf pages from the manual
The one you have should have two small hydraulic rams attached to the front wheels link arm and going across to the front of the engine along the axle beam
The control valve is indeed in the steering box and the pump contains a filter which could be blocked. fairly simple stuff
You can easily check by taking the supply pipe off the control valve and putting it back into the pump filler , start the engine and see how much oil flows out the pipe and back
the one the other poster is talking about is similar to what we are fitting to our 135 as an after market kit and is a power assistance ram that has a long ram running from under the stearing box down to the front wheel the stearing box pushes on this via its valve which allows oil in to the ram to asssist until you stop turning the steering.
