I was mowing with the neighbors MF 135 diesel and the PTO lever finally gave up. I may attempt a repair but would like some help and/or pointers..

This is a well used and abused tractor, he had the PTO lever wired to the seat mount so it would stay in gear, I was having trouble with the bush hog blades getting out of position and unbalanced then the PTO quit working. Now the lever just flops back and forth with out engaging anything..

If I take the side cover the lever is attached to off am I going to have oil running out? Any idea what could have broke in the lever engagement mechanism?

Thanks
Bob

Bob, Yes I think the oil level is close to the pto lever's boss height you could tilt the tractor to one side a little just to make sure. I have a MF135 but have never taken that cover or linkage off, I do know mine has a pinned(bolt) shaft through the cover ,the pin didn't come out did it?Of course not that would be too easy to fix.You probably don't have a manual being that it is not your tractor ,If the owner does it should give more insight than I can at this point, because I'm not near my manual, /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gifSorry But this website is a great place for info so I'm sure someone has been blessed with such an experience that will help you with your problem. I will look in my manual when I get home and check back to see if you have been helped by then /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Bob, The book says drain the oil? So ,If you don't drain it you'll probably drop something in it anyhow and try to use a magnet to get it out(fun exercise in futillity)But here is an exploded view of the lever ,Mark

If the tractor needs it go ahead and replace your hydraulic filter while you have thsi cover off and the oil drained. I believe you have to take this cover off to change the filter anyway so you might as well kill two bird with one stone. Also if you do change the oil make sure and use the MF recommended PermaTrans.

Thanks for the tip, we have a MF dealer in town, as I will probably be paying him a visit I will pick up a filter and new oil. Knowing the owner I would just about bet it hasn't been changed for several years...

The MF135 generally uses a Mesh hydraulic filter which can be cleaned and reused. Only replaced if damaged. Check Bareco site for pictures also big Dean Austin has some good advice at his site.
