Looking for advice on a Marvin Schebler carb... will run for 10 and 15 seconds, then acts like it loads up and kills the tractor... rebuild kit in it, cleaned, etc... same results... carb set at 2 turns on large run jet, and tried all turns on idle... no different run maybe at best 30 to 40 seconds, then dies, backfiring in process..

Thanks for any help!

Did you remove the elbow going into the carb., where the fuel line attaches, and clean it..?? There is a mesh screen, or should be, attached to that el that can get plugged. If just partially plugged, it will allow enough fuel through to fill the bowl, but not enough to keep the engine running.

While the line is unhooked from the carb., make sure you have good flow from the fuel tank. If not, check the screen in the top of the sediment bowl.

Most of the Z series Continentals have the carb jetting such that ~1-1/4 turns is the correct main jet fuel setting and ~3/4 turn out is the idle air setting (idle mixture setting is an air setting not fuel so enrichment occurs via screwing in the idle mixture needle).

Many ignition system problems are wrongly diagnosed as" carb problems". Make sure that you have a FAT BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, THE COLOR OF LIGHTNING. If you don't, you need to address that issue before screwing around with the carb.

Make sure that you have adequate fuel to the carb. Open the plug on the bottom of the fuel bowl and with a suitable container under the carb, make sure the tank valve is wide open. You should have a gush of fuel like a cow peein' on a flat rock! If it dribbles or is intermittent, you have a restriction in the fuel delivery system. Make sure the tank vent is clear it's usually in the fuel cap) and the tank valve screen if it has one is clear. Check the fuel lines and the fuel elbow filter as the other poster suggested. Make sure the float setting is correct. The TSX carbs are very sensitive to this. Do all these checks one at a time and if you change anything, just change one thing at a time and then try a start. Systematically doing this will allow you to determine the root cause of the problem.
