Hi All,

Dad & I stopped by our local MF dealer today, and were looking at compacts. Gonna get one next summer.

We saw a nice little 1523. I was looking at the specs online, and it lists the PTO as being "Trans driven/independent 540 RPM. What does this mean? If the tractor is not moving, the PTO will not be working?

Thanks in advance,

Will

The rear PTO works while the 1523 is standing still.

The gear version (trans driven) will keep pushing you. The hydro version has an independent PTO.

1523 hydro has an indepentent hydraulic PTO clutch driven of the hydro (it will not push the tractor), 1523 standrard has an over running sprague (oneway) clutch, will make a harmless racheting noise as the PTO winds down if you disengaged the PTO with an implement hooked to it.

I guess that they are trying to save paper when they won't put in an extra line to separate the different versions. They don't need to with the liters/ gallons, cc/cubic inches but they do need to on transmission types and other things. All the manufactures do it and it does confuse many I'm sure.
I wasn't saying that the independent PTO in the hydro would push the tractor. I was referring to the engine drive version. Engine driven PTOs without an over running clutch will drive a tractor. I wasn't aware that the standard transmission version of the 1523 had an internal over running clutch. Do you have a picture of the sprague assembly area? If you do, can you post it?

So what does this mean? ( Not a ground drive PTO, correct?) And how does it work? Is it as reliable as the live PTO? What are the down falls? We will be doing a lot of PTO work, and want to know know if there are any down falls? We probably won't need anything bigger than a 1523, but would the extra money be worth the upgrade ( to a 1528 )?? We also plan on keeping it a long time, so we want to make the right choice.

Thanks,

Will

Will,
Go to TractorSmart home page. Click enter then Click on the Info button at the top of the page. Then click on Tractor Power Take Off. It gives a pretty good description of the different types of PTOs.
A tractor with a trans driven PTO with or without a overrunning clutch isn't the best for PTO work. It is good to keep the cost of the tractor down.

Both versions are reliable, just different ways of accomplishing the same thing. Attached is a drawing of the sprague clutch assy
