MF 1635
Hi all,

It's time to do the transmission oil and filter and I thought I'd double-check what I'm doing with my MF 1635 HST. I thought I'd also note a couple of quirks with my tractor -- I can't let my ignition key spring back when starting (I have to turn it back slowly to keep it started mostly in the winter), and I often find it hard to find the turtle/slow gear range. I sometimes find my tractor stalls when backing up in cold weather but wonder if it's the seat kill switch with a bit of position switching as I back up. Just wondering if anyone has the same problems or maybe these are service items. I've grabbed three pics -- what I think the drain plug is, the filter, and what seems to be a strainer or something -- not sure if i need to touch that.

Any help is much appreciated.

I've added the plug and filter instructions from the owners and service manuals. The scanned images are from the owners manual. The service manual didn't necessarily help much and offered less information. The mid-PTO drain plug seems to be the main drain plug from the service manual. I find the filter instructions just plain confusing. How many filters are there -- 1 or 2, and where are they? I can't seem to locate the drain plug from the operators manual either. The mid-PTO one from the operators manual seems to be the one I took a pic of.

I bought a 1529 in the spring so I am learning along with you. The only issue I can comment on is the stalling in reverse. My seat kill switch is very sensitive and I have had it shut off the tractor numerous times when leaning to the side to try to see where my forks are. I would guess it would be very similar on your 1635.

I've got a new 1736 with 50 hours on it and need to change the filter and fluid. I found the owners manual confusing just like you did. It states that with a hydro there is an extra filter. I spent 30 minutes crawling around under it looking for a second filter that I couldn't find. Since it's a new model, my dealer mechanic didn't know either. I ordered the service manual and like you said, that had less info than the owner's manual.

The 1600 and 1700 Series tractors have 2 hydraulic filters regardless of what the manuals say. One spin on filter and the internal suction filter. The suction filter is just intended to be removed, cleaned and reinstalled unless damaged. As far as draining the old oil I would suggest draining from all plugs to get as much of the old oil out as possible, including mid-pto if installed. As far as the key switch on that 1635, sounds defective, replacing it should take care of it. The seat switches are ridiculously sensitive on all sub-compact and compact tractors these days. Only thing you can do is adjust it to allow for as much engagement as possible, try adding a spacer to the bottom of the seat pan where it engages the switch. Or just do what most of us do..........

Thanks all for the replies. I'm hoping the suction filter you're mentioning is what I'm pointing to in my second picture. The spin on was fairly easy to locate and another post had a similar pic and referred to it as a strainer so I think I'm on the right track. Thanks for the advice jsftractors on the ignition and seat switch -- this is what I figured. The only thing I need to figure out is the plugs to drain the oil. Still not as simple to spot as it probably should be. I've seen other posts that mention multiple plugs on planetaries etc. that aren't obvious to me. Thanks all -- I'll report back when I'm done.

My 1660 ignition was doing the same thing, called dealer and they sent me a new one which was simple to install, no more problems.

I've got a 1643 and like it. What do you think about your 1660?

I love the 1660, I honestly would not change anything on it if I could design it myself.
