All the replacement switches I have seen at least 6 poles, and my MF 231 has 3 wires to attach. How does one figure out the placement of the wires? Colors are somewhat faded, but they seem to be: Green with Gray stripe, Brown, and Gray or Black. The original switch has 3 poles. Thank you!

I think I have enough information now. I am working every other week or so on this tractor in another county an hour or so from home so I try to get all the information and the parts I need to do a good job. My problem is that I am hooking up replacement turning signal lights from this place in India to a new replacement switch made in Poland, and having two unknowns hooked up to one another is not a good plan. However, I used the electrical diagram in my shop manual to hopefully figure out the signal light wiring, and a nice young man at an internet tractor store gave me pointers as to hooking up the switch. Anyway, we shall see how it goes!

I attached alligator clips to small 4-wheel battery and on post the knob was pointing to. next, I turned the knob to the left and found the correct pin using a simple tester. did the same for the turn to the right, so problem solved. no big deal.

Us tractor guys are smart. Nice work figuring it out yourself.
Thank you. I really struggled with the wiring (along with everything else). I had a missing fuse that had 2 dangling blue wires, panel lights that were missing or disconnected, a plugged up oil pressure sending unit that caused another dangling wire, 3 disconnected wires under the seat that I have forgotten where they attached, headlamp switch that did not work, turn signal switch (the subject of this query) bad, 2 headlight wires switched on the grill mount, dead flasher unit, broken front turning signals that were replaced with generic lights from India that the tractor had 4 wires going to and only 2 wires on the light, and so on and so forth.

It was an epic struggle for my limited skill level, but all the wires are attached to something, and all lights come on and flash when requested. Even the battery lift plate tie downs were missing that I machined some short lag screws down a little and epoxied an aluminum rectangle on top to make them turn. And the shift knobs were gone, so I got $3 knobs that would fit a MF 230 and drilled and tapped a metric thread to fit this MF 231. Otherwise, the factory lift plate screws were about $50 something each, plus the replacement knobs were about that much as well, each. Anyway, I brought this tractor home to work on it over the winter and I have been diligent in working thru all the problems.

During the summer I had replaced all the fluids and filters and worked thru water in the transmission, worn out fuel cutoff and lift pump, and broken glass filter bottom. By the time I would discover a broken part, order it, go down and install, it was a long time. so, I had to find a nice young man to come over and purge my fuel line and get it started. I promptly did what I needed to do with the tractor and brought it home. I was done with commuting because there was so much that had to be done and cold weather was upon me.

Oh, and I am a UT grad from 51 years ago. We rolled then! I think one of the best games I attended was when Bear Bryant brought an undefeated team to Knoxville and we won something like 7-0, derailing their championship season hopes.

Always look at and tackle one problem at a time....... If you are looking at the forest, you get lost (overwhelmed) trying to find a tree....

S.43495 is the Sparex part number for the flasher on my 1998 Massey Ferguson 231.
If you have any questions about the 231, I may could help you. I have a lot of information on that model.

Thank you for your reply. I have had a lot of questions on this project, but I am happy to report that all the aftermarket lights come on, flash when needed, and signal when turning. I spent the winter pouring over the wiring diagram and addressing these and other needs on this project. All is ready to go.

I just got thru with this one when I had a senior moment and fried a starter wire and have been peeling back insulating tape to its source and rewrapping all of the wires on my big tractor. What a chore. I hope I don't do that again soon! Almost ready to hook them all up and see how well I did or did not do. I tell you, it is easy to mess up and cause a major catastrophe. I hope I was able to keep it from being really bad tho.
