Hi all,

I just got a MF 231 tractor with a MF 232 loader. I did not get the manuals with the tractor, but plan to get them ordered ASAP. I wondered if anyone could help with something. Where do you check and fill the transmission/hydraulic oil. The 3 pt hitch seems a little slow/shakey near the top of the lift cycle. I figure it probably just needs some oil, but I do not know where to check/fill it.

Another question I have pertains to the differential lock. There is a label on the dash, but half of it is gone. It does read something about what to do if the differential lock does not disengage as it should, but like I said the lower portion of the label is missing.

Thanks in advance.

I can help you because thats the same tractor I have, but I don't have a loader. Mine is a 1998 with about 800 hours on it.

You add/fill the hydraulic/transmission (same sump) right by the gearshift lever boots where the 2 shift levers: Range (L, S, H) and Gear Selection (1, 2, 3, 4) go into the top of the transmission. Its a "cap" looking plug. Will probably be between a 15mm-19mm socket (give or take a few sizes).
You check the oil by the dipstick on the right side of the transmission (there's markings on the stick that you'll see, for the full/add level when you pull it out). ****Its almost directly under the seat, on the RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION.**** YOU CAN'T MISS IT. There is also a SMALL SLIDE LEVER, with label, by the dipstick that has "+" or "-" signs on it. This is for the downward speed of an implement, whenever it's attached to the tractor. ** It's in the same area as where you put your foot on the differential lock lever to engage differential lock.** Slide the lever forward (towards the front of the tractor) if you want the implement to drop faster. Slide the lever rearward (towards the rear of the tractor) if you prefer the implement to drop slower. THE LEVER IS VERY TOUCHY! I have mine almost in the center and I have it tie-wired so it won't move.

As for the decal on the dash about the differential lock, it reads something like " If differential lock fails to dis-engage, automatically depress clutch pedal." (I think that's exactly what it reads.) Just remember to NEVER EVER engage differential lock while only 1 rear wheel is spinning! ALWAYS STOP BEFORE ENGAGING, if you didn't already know. Sometimes you may have to apply alittle pressure with your foot on the differential lock lever and roll forward just a hair in order for the differential lock to engage. (This is normal because the gears and components in the rear end has to line up with each other.) And sometimes you may have to go in reverse alittle to get it to dis-engage. This is normal also.

I hope I have helped you and answered your questions. If you have anymore just let me know and I'll see what I can do, with the best of my ability. I have the Operator's and Parts manuals for this tractor (not for sale!). I also have numerous cross over numbers for engine oil filters and fuel filters. I don't have a Service manual yet, but I'll eventually buy one (expensive).

I have owned several different makes and models of tractors, and I have operated Many different makes and models and the 231 Massey Ferguson is my most favorite tractor I have ever been on. Either a person loves it, or hates it. There's no in between. I happen to be one of em' that LOVES it! I feel very fortunate to own one.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
