My 231S is making some strange clanking noises at idle after working hard in summer heat. Once cooled and restarted, the clanking disappears. I suspect the scotch pump is shot. Also, my 3 point goes up fine but lowers very slowly regardless of the fast-slow setting. I suspect the cover must come off and the valve in the gear/hydrauic case adjusted.

My question is, does my tractor model have to be split to R&R the scotch pump? Also, what should I do to the lift mechanism while I have it off, new piston, cylinder, rebuild the top link spring mechanism?

Any other suggestions while I'm in the case?

How many hours does it have?

If you mean the 3pt pump it's the valve in that sense you control the lift by controlling the output of the pump, but lift the cover and do a base adjustment is a goog idea, might let a MF dealer do it, shouldn't take more than a hour if you delivers the cover to them, there are some special tools involved. I do belive splitting it will be the easiest way to remove the pump a check it, but before doing that I would check if it produce the right pressure.

Are you sure that when you have the lift raised all the way, that the lift lever isn't going into constant pump mode?
Even on mine and previous 135 I had when in constant pump mode the sounds of the pump change .

The noise is coming from the front of the gearcase, under the shift levers, toward the bottom, hence my suspicion the pump is the source of the noise.

Sometimes the mounting points for the pump snap of, then you can have some noise, have you got the pressure tested?

No pressure test but the 3 point is working OK. How do I test pressure? It appears I would need a gauge and some fittings. I could tap into the pressure at the diverter valve on top of the hydraulic top plate? There is a Tisco TS300 diverter valve there with some hoses and fittings.

If possible a picture would be helpful

I guess I would need to remove the pump and inspect it. Does the 231S need to be split to remove the scotch pump?
