I have a friend that has a GC2610TLB that he just recently did the 50 hour service. He had a problem which resulted in the dealer coming out to look at the tractor. During the course of the conversation the subject of servicing the front axle came up. The mechanic advised him that they are no longer using hydraulic fluid in the axle, but have gone to 80-90 gear lube. The reason being is that the hydraulic fluid tends to seep out around the wheel seals. Has anyone else been told this? I know my 2410 has some signs of seepage around the right front wheel and it only has 168 hours on it. I am looking for further input before I change my front axle fluid. Warranty is not an issue as mine has expired. Thanks for the input.

I can believe that. I put synthetic 75W90 in ours when we did the service, will do it again.

The only reason they factory fill with it is convienence.

The front axle will be fine with either universal hydraulic fluid or 80/90 woeight. Just be sure not to but 80/90 in the rest of the tractor.

The reason you want to use 80-90 gear lube is, it is a better lubricant when you only have gears. It is not a lot thicker then the hydraulic oil, so don't expect it to make a big difference in your leakage.

Maximum protection would come from 80-90 EP synthetic gear oil.

Also, I came across this the other day. We have a mechanic that put 2 new bearings and axle seals on a 2006 Chevy HD pickup. 2 days later the truck came back, because of the 2 seals leaking. They reinstalled new ones. Again 2 days later, they were leaking again! So, I went online looking for TSB's (service bulletins) on the axle and fluid requirements. Behold!!! GM does not recommend to fill to the check plug hole, but only to fill up to 1 1/4" below the hole....otherwise seal failure can occur!! So, I wonder, with all the front axle seepage we are reporting here may be the result of the same thing.
I have, on occasion, when my front axle is hot to open the fill plug to let the pressure release, and then re-close the plug while hot. So far 120 hrs. with Amsoil hydro fluid in it...no leaks yet. Now, you can bet tomorrow I will check, and it will be all over the floor!!
