I just purchased a MF 255 at a really good price because the hydraulics don’t work at all. Neither the PTO, the 3 Pt Hitch, nor the single rear hydraulic remote will function. I bought this for a project.

The owner thought the problem was the hydraulic pump. I have limited knowledge of this machine but my perusal of the parts book and service manual indicate the hydraulics for the remote and 3 Pt use different pumps.

I’m pretty sure I will have to wind up splitting this machine to get to the source of the problem.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to start?

Remove 3pt hitch...Drain gearbox oil....Remove hydraulic filter from the bottom......remove splitpin from Sheersleeve and slide sheersleeve onto topshaft and take out.
Now loosen PTO shaft at the back and slide shaft out.
Now lift pump out of the gearboxcasing.
Get a overhaulkit and overhaul that punp.

I disagree with removing/rebuilding the hydraulic pump(s) as any sort of "first step" here. I suggest you first determine what system you're dealing with. Is this a multipower transmission with independent PTO? Is it an 8 speed with live PTO?
Before condemning the pump I would first try and decide if all that is even turning. Regardless of transmission or clutch type all drive to the pumps and pto starts at the clutch one way or another. This could well be another misdiagnosed "hydraulic problem" that actually turned out to be a clutch problem. I've seen that on more than one occasion.

I agree with Harry in Ky !
Remove inspectioncover under clutch and see if hollowshaft is turning with the engine.

Thanks for the input. Am I correct that the 3 Pt has separate hydraulic pump than the aux hydraulics? Both the service manual and parts book refer to the Ferguson pump and the aux hydraulic pump?

It’s a 1976 8 speed trans with live pto. I wasn’t condemming the pump. I suspect it’s NOT the pump since I can’t see how one pump could affect all three things. I figured this would be a challenge anyway.

Love to get my hands greasy on these.
