MF 2745 repair vs throw away question

MF 2745 V8 diesel, cab, double tires on rear

An associate of mine has a decision to make about his MF 2745. The tractor needs a complete engine overhaul / repair and he has been quoted $6,000 to $8,000 for the overhaul.

The question would be... is it worth it ??? or scrap the tractor. Would there be any real possibility of recovering repair costs if he sells the tractor right after the rebuild since he has no need for this tractor.

I would be looking for a used engine and not trying to make an old one new, that will be very expensive

These tractors were common around here once and the motors were their down-fall , Real nice ones make $4-7000 on auctions .
I've had 2 and put 6 cylinder perkins 6354 turbo intercooler in both and made useable tractors out of them (150hp). With motors costing me $1500-2500 fron combine wreckers .
6 cyl or V8 ... Best donors for used engines are Dead MF combines (750-760 and 850-860 ) Most MF combines died because they were just too unreliable or they were prone to fires so some good engines are around , Shame to see a good tractor scrapped for a bad motor but a rebuild is worth more than the tractor , I always toy'd with the idea of putting a CUMMINS L10 or CDC ,into it but never had the time ? Imagine that 270hp ooooooh.
