Hi,
I have been lurking here for a while. Joined and lost password. Now I found my way back and unfortunately need help.

I was bushhogging with MF 283 tractor. Think it has A4.248 Perkins engine naturally aspirated. I was going along in low gear in thick weeds (no wood) and I heard a l slight knock. I thought it was the bush hog. That occured for a few seconds then "POOF" and engine quit. Oil was all over left hand side of engine and dipstick was just hanging out of tube by the bottom end. Oil was everywhere.

What happened?

It won't turn over and no oil showing on dipstick. It was at full mark when I began.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

uff da sounds like the compression went in to the crakcase and pressuized it only way that could happen is you blow a cylinder or at least put a hole in one, anyway doesn't sound good

Thanks for reply balernbud. No, that doesn't sound good at all. I am a shade tree mechanic but will probably try to rebuild the engine myself. Would you or anyone recommend any source for a rebuild kit?

Be sure to inspect very close. Test or have your injectors tested to be sure they're good.

I've used kits from Hy-Capacity. The full kits are very reasonable. Parts seem of good quality. The Agco kits are usually in the same ballpark.

there's lots of kits out, I would just search on line and find one.
I think I would pull it apart first and check to make sure you didn't damage the engine block or something else before you spend money on a kit. You maybe looking for a short or long block remanufactered

I had a close call once, I did my pre-start engine check and due to poor light did not set the stick properly. As I walked back to the barn to close the door after pulling out I noticed a huge oil trail. the pressure was pumping the oil right out, if I had not notice who knows.

Question, do any engines have a low oil cut off switch? I think I know this answer but just a thought add oil.

When you say won't turn over do you mean it won't crank or it won't start?

Short of that sounds like it seized, sorry.

Seems like brush pulled the stick out, is there any way to better protect the stick? No oil pressure gauge or light prior to "poof"

As for future mowing, I have a loader and bucket which I keep lowered to knock down the brush, if you have one but not attached use it.

I have had branches push up 2 -3 time and hit my fan and lucky it did not hit the belt. So I avoid backing up over uncut material, this happened to me when I did not do a prewalk and bailed out of a cutting pass. Also doing a 2nd final cut in the opposite direction, another no no.

Well there's my 2 cents, good luck

Failure of one or more piston rings causes crankcase to pressurize with combustion gases. Major blowby sends dipstick and oil out of the crankcase.

Won't turn over: piston(s) and/or crankshaft damage is jamming the works.

Sorry about that.
Good luck in getting it fixed.

Check with shoup manufacturing for a rebuild kit. The one I bought from them was fairly cheap with genuine perkins parts in it.

Take a bar and gently pry, and push on the front CS pulley, if you have a dial indicator use that if not see if the crank has end play. If it does not have end play, that is a very bad thing, that means the crank is seized if it has end play, but when you try and turn it with a socket it just rocks back and forth, then it is the Rod or Piston. Do not use the starter, if it breaks loose, nothing good will come of it, and you may have a salvageable core. If you put a hole in it you do not.

Thanks to everyone for all the great info. I will check things suggested. Also will shop around at places suggested when I get into engine.

Nothing is touching the dipstick. I looked in radiator, coolant is at normal level. I am hoping an in frame rebuild will suffice.
