I have a MF54A backhoe attachment, its not mounted on anything yet but I have looked at it and think the boom has to be removed from the base to get the swing motor out.

It has a tab that keys it to the base and then after you have the boom off the base it looks like you remove all the hyd hoses off the top of the swing motor and then either when you pick the swing motor up a little it comes free of the boom or it has a big pin from the bottom that secures it to the boom.

I have a book that came with it, I will look at it when I get home from work and see if I can tell anything from that.

I just took the hoe up to my property 30 miles from here the other day, will be back up there in 4 days or so.

Im thinking that when I mount up the hoe that I may just remove the swing motor and mount 2 hydr actuators instead for the swing, to avoid the situation you are in. My boom is not attached to the base right now.

That is probably a good idea. I removed the 2 bolts from the top. It looks like it holds a large pin that goes into the top of the drum. It will not move. I also removed bolt that is under the drum. There is also a large bolt and nut that runs horizontal.(have not removed yet) Just not sure what steps go first and if the top pin pulls through the top. Maybe I will have a chance to work on it again over the next couple days. I did remove the whole backhoe attachment from the tractor. It is MF 40 industrial. Thanks again

There may be someone on heavyequipmentforums dotcom backhoe section that has worked on these Massey backhoes.

I just looked at the parts book that I have, it says MF52A on it but it all seems to look the same as my mf54a.

Looks like the swing motor shaft comes out of the bottom and has large splines that engage into the backhoe pivot that the boom attaches to.

So you have to get the hoses off the top and possibly the pivot retainers etc that are above the swing motor so that you can raise swing motor far enough to pull the splined shaft up out of pivot assembly and then pull swing motor out of pivot.

My mf52a book shows the upper shaft o ring is a 3in by 3.25 in by 1/8 inch. And the upper cap o ring is a 8 inch by 8.25 in by 1/8 in.

That is the same drum I have. Does the manual you have say anything about lifting the shaft out of the top of the drum after the 2 bolts are removed. It will not move at all. The picture shows broken bolts on the pivot assembly under the drum-do they have to be removed to take the drum off.

I dont have the repair manual, just parts manual for mf52. Repair manuals are available, do a google search.

You have the drum out and the top cover off of it?

The shaft is attached to a big vane thats under the cover. The shaft doesnt just come out the top. Cover has to come off and then you can change the shaft seal.

These swing motors were made by Cessna hydraulics which was bought out by Eaton corp so they may have parts if you cant get them from Massey Ferguson.

Backhoe unit is off tractor but the drum is not removed from unit. Can't figure out how it is removed. Probably missing something. Going to try and track down a manual.
