Dealing with a non functional pto on a MF85. PTO spins in ground drive, but nothing in engine drive. Doesn't matter tractor rpm of idle, or full throttle. Engine pto worked well before the machine was parked a few years ago.
Filters and fluid( was bad shape) have been cleaned/replaced with diesel to flush, as well as PS filter and screen. Power steering works "good." 3 Point was also very slow before this change and works great now that the filter/fluid has been renewed.

When I move PTO lever from neutral to engine, or ground over to engine I feel no real resistance or click. I suspect that is normal given the hydraulic nature of it. PTO light doesn't work, but I suspect it is a light issue.

I realize my next course of action is to probably split the tractor. But is there any possible thing to look into before then? Possibly a cover,or plate I can remove to potentially get into the pto/relief valve and associated lines to clean/inspect before, with some creative tool use, I have to split it? If so, where?

I wouldn't think that the PTO clutch is fried, but I am curious as to if the PTO brake could be stuck on if hydraulic pressure can't get back there to release it?

Thanks

G'Day, does yours have the 2-stage clutch and live PTO, or hydraulically-applied independent PTO? My first suspicion - presuming it's the live version - is a fault with the engagement lever, most likely a broken pin through the handle. It moves a sliding collar which joins two shafts - this can be accessed if necessary through the side cover, so there's no need to split the tractor.

Its got I believe a live PTO that is controlled by the hydraulics. First stage kills the transmission, second stage dumps pto pressure I think.

Good to know, curious if I could get to the pressure relief valve or PTO control valve through any of the side panels? To check for a clog as well?

Thanks for the reply.

Anyone have an idea how I could remove the PTO lever, or which side panel I should remove to try to get to PTO relief/control valve to hopefully remove and clean it?

Remove the LH side cover if your PTO lever is on that side. You may have to remove the floorboard to access it. Either the clutch hub is rung out or stripped splines or like the first guy said about the lever being broken.

Could be all you need is a clutch adjustment on the outermost bolts and jam nuts.

Pulling the top lift cover and yanking the PTO shaft out will gain you access easier than splitting.
