Hey guys. My neighbor just bought a "new to him" tractor. I'd like your opinions on the purchase. I'll try to fill in as much info as possible. I really appreciate your help, even if it's after the fact.

Year: 2005 MF 431 (2 wheel drive of course)
HP: 52, PTO gets 44.
Manual tranny
Hours: 220
Front end loader: 17XX model (can't remember the last two numbers)
Ag tires

The following implements came with the tractor:
5' Eagle box blade (bought new with the tractor)
6' Howse bushhog (bought new with the tractor)
250 gallon diesel tank with hose and pump (older version, but works)

The tractor and implements are in great condition. They are all dirty from usage, but with a pressure washer, the tractor will look like new. Everything seems to work fine on the tractor.

He bought all this from a private party and paid $13,400.00 for it all.

Any thoughts?

How are these tractors? It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but seems like a workhorse to me. I have read good things on the Perkins engine.

Thanks,
Podunk

Very simple, durable little tractor with no frills... will probably last him a lifetime. A front mounted pump will make it a better loader tractor simply because it will provide more oil flow for the loader to move faster.

So did either the 431 or 451 come with remotes?

451 had remotes factory, I think it was an installed option on the 431.

I have to disagree with the pressure washer idea, it will put water into places it does not need to be. Seals are usually lipped to keep fluids inside and not so well at keeping outside pressure of whatever type out. Sure its easier and if that is all that matters go ahead. But for anything I own, and open hose and cleaner is all that my equipment is ever going to see.

I have to agree, I am not a big fan of pressure washing greased, spinning components for the reasons discussed. The dirt is doing no harm, dry bearings will.
