Simple problem that up to now is not proving simple to resolve. Once the engine gets warm and I work it a bit oil leaks from the rocker cover gasket. Not much, but messy and irritating... and unnecessary!
1976 MF135 Perkins 3.152 diesel as per....
Tractor is new to me a few weeks.
I thought I had found the cause (the original gasket was not fitted properly and had a couple of bows in it), cleaned up the cover and head, wiped with thinner, new gasket with Curil-T sealer on either side. I noted the rocker cover joint had several lips so I assumed these were to allow the correct gasket thickness when they touched the head, so I tightened the two cap nuts until they just did...... and still it pi$$ed out; worse than before if anything and in the same place (just above the inlet manifold, next to the push-rods, towards the front half)
Thought the breather pipe or cover connection might be blocked (but they aren't), so bonnet/tank off again, clean up again, and try a more 'aggressive' sealant (Wellseal), and more care to ensure the gasket sat straight and square. Same tightening technique ..... and the same end result. I have run the engine with the breather pipe off and there is no pressure at all in the cover.
I did note the PO had used silicone sealant on the original gasket, and that's usually sign someone has had a problem before.
I can only conclude the rocker cover is twisted/warped/bent in that segment, though nothing too obvious - so I have ordered a new cover and another new gasket.
Two questions of the learned:
1. What gasket sealant do you use/recommend? (I used to only use a bit of grease, and have never had such grief with a rocker cover before. I used Curil-T because its gentle, never really sets and is fuel/oil resistant)
2. Any other tips/observations/advice for the next time?
... because this is starting to pi$$ me off. Mind I can now get the bonnet & fuel tank off in about 15 minutes!
