MF231 tractor, alt went bad. Got a replacement and put it in, but the wiring seems wrong. With the key on but engine is off, the alternator is getting smoking hot. From my research, a red wire should go to the large terminal at the 12 oclock position, and a gray wire should go to the D+ terminal. Problem is, the tractor does not have wires of that color. There is a wire that comes from the starter. Does that go to the main terminal on the alternator? There is a thinner wire that comes out of wiring harness at the top of the engine. Should that wire connect to the D+ terminal?

Your power wire should go to the main terminal, that is likely the wire that goes to the power terminal on the starter then back to the battery. The wire going to the D+ should be a ignition switched 12V source that is off when the ignition is off.

Why not use a alternator/starter rebuild service? Usually cheaper and you won't have the incompatibility issue.

Or, watch this and do it yourself...alternators, regardless of brand are similar...rotor, stator, rectifier, voltage regulator, brushes and bearings....
