I posted this in the MF section, but haven't gotten any feedback. I thought maybe I'd try here.

I have a 35 with the Perkins Diesel. The tractor had a Bush Hog Loader attached when I bought it lasty winter. The loader seems quite capable on the tractor, but is somewhat slow for my liking. It is running off the internal hydraulics using the diverter valve that mounts under the seat.

So, I am kicking around the idea of mounting a pump up front, and fabricating a reservoir to mount on the loader posts. I am an accomplished welder and amatuer machinist. I am confident that I can come up with most of what I need without buying premade parts. I have searched, but have found very little information on doing this to a 35. Any photos, links, or advice would be most welcome.

One of the biggest hurdles for me is to understand how to get the drive shaft from the engine crank ot the pump mounted out front. Is there a way to run the shaft through the front axle pivot?

Thanks!

Good mornin Arbo,

I don't know how your front end is set up. I have a MF 85 gasser, my buddy has a 65 diesel. Is there room up front? If there is, you could use a lovejoy coupler to drive a pump. Or, you could use an engine mounted pump driven off of an accessory belt. Post some pics of your unit. With your welding and machining ability, sounds like it should be pretty easy.

Arbo, check the front end of your tractor for a hole that runs from the centerline of your engine crankshaft. You may have to remove the steel guard that kinda protects the rad area and the pivot point of the front axle.
Behind that guard there may be some tapped holes. These holes fit a SAE-B size pump. The hole should be slightly above the front axle pivot point.
If you feel around the crankshaft pulley you may feel 3 or 4 drilled and tapped holes. You can get an adapter plate that bolts to the crankshaft pulley and then you thread a shaft into the adapter plate. On the end of the shaft is a 7/8 13 spline hole. I searched around for the least expensive pump and came up with one from The Surplus Center.
A couple of websites show an adapter that is common for the 35, 135, 65 and 165 tractors.
If your front end has the hole and pump mount, I can send you the part numbers and pics of what I found.

If you look at the front pulley on the engine there can be just the plane pulley with the 4 screw holes, the cam for a hand crank or a plate attached to the 4 holes using rubber mounted screws with a reverse threaded hole in the middle. You will need the plate and then there is a shaft that goes thru the center pivot pin instead of sometimes the hand crank on earlier models. Think you could get the shaft in either a spline or a round keyed version. I do not have the bracket made speciffically for the application but saw one a few months ago and it bolts to the four holes around the pivot pin hole and then has bar stock to space the pump away and then an SAE boss to bolt the pump to. The bracket that I have my pump bolted to is part of the loader frame and some times flexes under load alittle causing the shaft to wear a little and is not something that you want. Another thing to look out for is the bushings and the pivot pin being worn and the slop in the pivot point causing a bind on the shaft so if your front end is worn too much you need to watch out.

If you look at this catalog on section and page 6-23 it has pictures of the shafts and drive adapters.

If you find a pump bracket or make one up let me know I need to find one.

OK, It appears that I have a model that has the option for a hand crank starter. There ar no threaded holes in the front pulley. I went to look at a 135 that an old fella has near me. He has a front pump on that one, but there are some signifigant differences between the two machines. My other option that I have been kicking around is to use a Prince PTO pump with an extended shaft.

Another hair brained Idea I had was to run a pump with a v-belt drive. I was thinking about mounting a double groove sheave on the generator, and running a second belt to the hydraulic pump. My concern there is that I may stall the pump and burn the belt to shreds. Any experience or ideas on that?

I've seen accy drive pumps mounted to ford N's using the generator drive area. obviously a crank mounte dpump is the best bet.. pto next ( IMHO as long as you have live pto.. and thent he engine mounted next..)

You need to be careful. I have a 1964 MF-135 diesel that I bought in July06. I'm the 3rd owner. The previous owner said that the original owner put a hydraulic pump on the front of the engine to run an FEL. Result: broke the crankshaft where it goes through the front main bearing. The 2nd owner got an good deal because of that. He replaced the craknkshaft and installed the engine rebuild kit. This happened at 3100 hours on the clock. The 135 has about 4650 hours now.

My MF 135 has a front pump the shaft of which goes through the centre of the steering arms. Not all 135s were equipped to have this so I suspect the 35 is similar, requiring new pulley, centre pin (hollow) etc to do this.
I have seen a pto pump driven setup on a Massey -- it worked ok but did look a little klutzy. You might be able to find the parts you need at a wrecker or on the web.
Maybe you should just buy another 35 with a front pump:p
