MF35 Gas Tank Pressure

Hello folks, glad to join you. Been visiting this great site for years but now I have a quick question regarding my MF 35 with Continental gas engine. Tractor sputtered today like it was running out of fuel on 3rd hour of mowing so I shut it down to find out top of tank wet with couple teaspoons of gas. Loosened cap , which looks to be original OEM style ........Pshhhhhhhht.......pressure was built up in the fuel tank. Shouldn't the cap be self venting or is there another problem I am overlooking? I've had this tractor for 25 years and this is the first time this has happened. Any advice or help gladly appreciated.

Time to replace the cap, it should be vented.

Cap should be vented. Look for a smale hole in the cap and clean it out. Some bug probably got i nthere or some dust and dirt.

Hi Jerry/MT - thanks for your reply. I bought a new cap, $4.98 at NAPA although the parts man said that with today's gasoline, moisture and condensation build up in the tank on warm days and cause over pressurization. He recommended 'Sea Foam' or 'Heet' to dry out the fuel. I'll do that on next fill up. Thanks, have a great day!
