MF35 - Sputtering then stopping, now wont start

Hi guys,

New problem with my old FE35.

I was just out slashing, and noticed it sputted a bit, i thought ok, small fuel starvation. As i turned the corner, it sputted more and she stopped running. Cant start it again. Fuel tank is nearly full still.

I am guessing fuel blockage?. What can i troubleshoot first?.

Standard 23c? Check or change both fuel filters. Cheap place to start.

Its is a FE35 4 cylinder Petrol.

where is the fuel filter on a FE35?

Filter built into the glass fuel bowl. Turn fuel off then remove bowl THen unscrew all the copper washers.

Is the filter visable looking at the glass bowl, as there is nothing in there but fuel?.

Is there a secondary fuel filter on one of these machines?.

On this diagram it is different than what you describe

The diagram looks like it is for a diesel engine. Follow the fuel line from the tank and it should lead to a filter. The filter may just be a glass bowl with a screen to clean or it may have a cartridge filter. From the filter it should go to a fuel pump. Then to the carburetor. Check for fuel flow at the filter. If you have flow at the filter then check it between the pump and the carburetor, if you have fuel there then it is likely in the carburetor. I skipped some steps like checking fuel pressure and volume but this is a start for you. :thumbsup:

Fuel filter on my 68 135 is a screen at the top of the glass filter bowl. It has gotten clogged enough to restrict fuel flow in the past, despite being careful anytime I top it off with fuel there are always small particulates that accumulate over time. Difficult to see by looking at the glass bowl. If you've never removed the bowl to clean it there is a good chance it might be your problem.

Straight fuel line from the filter to the carb on mine. Shut off valve in the head of the filter bowl housing.

G'day Scott as Mike said there is a gauze filter in the top of the fuel bowl turn off the tap and remove the bowl and you will see it up there, also check for fuel flow at the carby ( would prob do this first ) just turn the tap off remove the fuel line and sit something under it to catch the fuel and turn the tap on, you should get a good stream. If you have got good fuel at the carby then you may have a blocked/jammed float needle if so then time to pull the carby and clean out.

Had a fella come and have a look.

He nailed it down to the capacitor/condensor inside the distributer. for some reason it is getting earthed, and no spark is being produced.

Anyway should have a new one by tuesday. We'll put it in and see if we can get a spark.

I had the same problem with my Massey 50. Also had a friend suggest coil. Turned out to be a fuel filter right in the fuel line just before the carburator.

The filter is a screen about the size of a cigarette filter. I cleaned it out and never had another problem.
