MFD/FWA = ???

Another noob question, and I promise that I Googled this before posting this question. What does the acronym mfd/fwa stand for? I know it relates to the drive configuration but I can't find it defined anywhere. I've seen a thousand listings that use it but not one that explains what it means.

TIA for an explanation.

Both acronyms refer to the front axle is a drive axle. FWA refers to front wheel assist or something like that. That means the front axle is not as robust, that comes into play in situations such as should you chain front tires during poor traction. The m in mfd stands for mechanical , I think not sure if it means anything special.

FWA = Front Wheel Assist

FWA can mean different set up than mechanical like JD's awfull hyd front wheel assist

Not sure if this is accurate but...

MFD is mechanical front wheel drive where the front wheels are being powered whenever the vehicle is attempting to move. I.e. If the rear wheels are spinning so are the front.

FWA: This system just has the front wheel assisting with moving and may or may not be mechanically linked. I.e like D7E stated the JD hydraulic assist.
This type of system does equate to full mechanical lock-up and can allow the rear wheels to spin and the front do not.
