Forsythia and Daffodils blooming everywhere, the third week of March, while the calendar says it was still "winter". Insane. Our "normal" highs this time of year should be in the upper 30's-lower 40's. Blossoms are something to look for in late April, not mid-March.
We came off 10 days of temps in the 70's to mid 80's. This is a potential disaster. Up here on the 45th Parallel, along the lake shores, is a major portion of the nation's fruit production. The Orchards are in full bloom. The late frost, that surely is coming, is supposed to come, is going to wipe out the ridiculously early blooms. This isn't row cropping, where one can re-plant. This is setting up to be a real disaster economically for the orchards.
As a market gardener, I can control my production timing, but this cruel trick by mother nature isn't something the orchard guys can do much about.
So, while everyone has no doubt enjoyed the absurdly warm winter/early spring, I fear there shall be quite a price to pay for it.
