I sold the Mitsubishi and have looked at a Case that a local person has for sale. The Kubota salesman took me over to see it. It looks to be in good condition and has 2100 hours (give or take 50, I forgot the exact reading). It is diesel and a little bit bigger than I was looking for, it is around 60 HP and 50 HP on the PTO. It will run anything I'll need in the future and has a really nice loader on it.

Is $10K a good price for a tractor of this age and hours? I am ready to go buy it, but wanted to do a quick check in here with you guys.

Thanks,

Mel

Is it a 585? If so good solid tractors,do like to eat clutches though when used as a loader tractor. Price sounds in the ballpark. Does the condition reflect the hours?

I'll have to ask on the model number.

I'm to go see it again tomorrow.

It looks like it is in good condition to me. Mostly stored in a shed, so not rusty, and the current owners have all the paperwork. They are selling it to buy a smaller, 4WD Kubota (they have a pretty substantial hill) and I think he wants a backhoe. The Kubota dealership is (or was) also a Case dealer (it is still on their receipt letterhead). They've done all the service on the tractor over the years.

On Machinefinder.com there weren't many 2100 hour tractors listed. Most were in the 4000-7000 hour range...and more expensive.

Cool Link!

After reviewing other machines on the other sites, I'm pretty sure it is a good deal. It is in great condition compared to the ohter $10K tractors with pictures on the two websites I checked.

Now, after looking at that link, I see that there is no 585 model for Case, so perhaps it has some other number...or was that an International number?

The grass is growing...and fast, and I need to get a mower and start mowing that 14.75 acres.

Before the weeds get started.

Woodbeef,

It *is* a 585. But that website with tractor pricing doesn't show a Case model 585. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Oh well. I bought it. They'll bring it over to me this weekend.

Looking at all the websites, seeing pictures and looking at prices with the hours, and a loader, it looks like a good deal.

20 years later and that tractor has been a workhorse! As I like to average my costs, it's down to about 1000/year if I add in repairs/maintenance/tires.

I've abused it by not having indoor storage, and should have had it serviced more often, but it probably needs a clutch and the brakes are shot. The FEL is rusting through, I've replaced the hydraulic lines 2 or 3 times, and one of the newer ones has a faulty connection and is leaking like crazy...need to get that one off and replaced again.

It is getting hard to get parts for it, so I'm going to start looking for a newer tractor. The Kubota dealership in town has always been fair, the JD dealership in town used to get on my last nerve (I have a commercial zero turn), but they have new ownership and the last experience with service was positive, but my neighbor thinks their service department is full of too many incompetent mechanics, but he used to sell farm equipment in his youth, so he's comparing to the "good ole days"...of simpler machines.

I want a smaller footprint tractor, I have smaller dry lots and gates now that this tractor cannot navigate, but not too small, since I like the idea of a grapple bucket to move trees that will need to be replaced.

I just bought a couple of CIH tractors: 395 and 895.....the 1990 -1994 versions of the X85 series with few changes. Very impressed with their ruggedness. My 895 service manual is for both versions so they must be pretty close in comparisons. Scuttlebutt has it that the English factory that built the X5 chassis made them for many years.......why change something that works!

If buying with a loader, engine access is severely limited due to the loader frame and you need to ensure that your front spindles are "well" greased. Steering knuckles up front may be overly worn too. When I bought my 895 (with a very roomy cab), it had a loader and I told the used dealer that I'd give him 10k for it without the loader....he was wanting 12,500 for it, and delivered to my farm....he agreed. I fixed a few things that had become inoperative and it's working out just fine as my round baler puller.
