Can anyone tell me how mid pto's are rated for power. Are they rated based on the gross hp of the engine? Thankx,Scott.

This may reveal yet another area of my ignorance, but I don't know of any reason why the power at the mid-PTO would be any different from the rear PTO. Since the RPM, at any given engine speed, is generally higher for the mid PTO, the gearing is obviously different so that torque, in turn, is different. But the result of lower torque and higher RPM should yield the same power.

Maybe someone who actually knows will tell us; --am I wrong on this???

Good question, Danged if know!
I do know that most mid PTO's are designed to spin between 2000 to 2500 RPM while the rear PTO at 540 RPM at the same engine "working" RPM.

Since many of the larger tractors only have rear PTO's I've got to assume that measured PTO HP is generally refering to the rear PTO.
But taken into consideration that a 3 blade finish mower as well as a front mount snow blower requires a great amount of an engines usable hp/torque to work that even with the gear reductions, the mid PTO may have the same HP rateing as the rear....

Who knows?
