A friend of a friend calle dus last night for a 'pig rescue' mission.

We periodically take, or place displaced farm animals. generally it is animal control or zoneing officers that call us to place animals that have been seized or are turned in. however on this occasion, a friend of a friend had taken ownership of a pig that their neighbor had. the neighbor was letting the pig run loose... so these people got him.. he became too much to handle, so they started asking for help... prev owner didn't want him back. Our mutual friends told them we had a farm, and aranged for us to get the pig.

So there I was last night.. it had just started to get dark at 5:30pm, and I was outside preping for a pig delivery. Had to rearange some of my other animals and setup a temporary pen for the new arrival while I got my regular pig pens situated and some other pigs moved. I was afraid that the little guy ( 5mo old ) was gonna escape from the holding pen i setup before i had my other animals moved to make room for him. About the time I figured everything was going good.. the little guy got the scent of the females I have... So then I had a young, strong, aroused pig to handle...

In the end, i got him in a pen in a holding 'cell' so that he could be acclimated to his cellmate. I moved an older male out of that pen which also has a younger female in it... as i didn't want the males to fight. what a job. I finished about 9pm... Wish i had been more prepaired for that..

I'm confuzled...friend of a friend has an unwanted pig on the hoof, you pick it up and make a pen for it. The following morning it isn't on the way to the butcher? That doesn't make sense to me! [:)]

We got a few other pigs as it is. If ones going to the block.. it'd be one of the fatter ones.. This one was small... fit in a med sized dog carrier.. not even good bacon or chops on him yet.. I'm patient..(grin)

Besides.. i got a young female he needs to service. My old male stopped 'servicing' about 2 ys ago.. so no piglets.. etc..

Your thread name brought back a long forgotten memory. About 40 years ago in my younger foolish days I was involved in a "midnight pig abduction". Hadn't thought about that in years. Thanks for the memory.

Here is my pig story. I have a 10 year old Vietnamese Pot Belly, neutured male. I was looking for some new broadband internet service because the company I had filed bankruptcy and was going to be shutting down in a month. I contacted a similar fixed wireless company and apparently without my knowing, they came out here to do a sight inspection. They went through the gate into the fenced back yard and must have had the gate open while they were here. I came home from work and my pig was gone. I couldn't figure out how, the gate was shut, no holes or loose places on the fence (chainlink). Hmm, well, where would I go if I was a pig? I'm thinking the cornfield across the road would be the place. After 2 days of searching for him in it, I found him. He follows me to the road, takes one look at the road and runs WAY faster than I knew he could back into the field. Well, he would be sighted here and there by neighbors, but I couldn't find him again. It didn't help that when a couple neighbors had seem him and told other neighbors that they were assumed drunk and delusional, lol! Well, finally someone sees him eating weeds under the bushes outside her house and she calls the sheriff to report a wild boar is in her yard. Luckily the deputies at least knew he was a pot belly pig, not a boar, but they chased him through the fields in their squad cars. Eventually he just passed out in another neighbor's yard and they called me. Poor little guy was nearly in shock. We managed to pick him up and put him in a horse trailer and bring him back and he recovered. I'm glad I didn't see them chasing my pig because I'd have been pretty mad... everyone who did though thought it was a hoot.

You had me fooled with that title, Soundguy! For all the world it sounded like a tale by "itsmecindi' from CBN, who I haven't seen anything from in ages!!

PS.. I found a way to keep people from coming into my yard....

hang a "Beware of bull'' sign at all your gates... and then get some longhorn cattle.

Sounds like you guys are having way too much fun there!!!!

Soundguy,

I'm not much into raising animals, but it is something that interests me. Do you have any pictures of how you fence them in? I've alwys been told pigs are worse than goats when trying to keep them behind a fence.

One thing I've been considering is building a large fenced area of at least half an acre and putting a one way gate on it to hold wild pigs. The idea is that they will come throught the gate for food, but not be able to get out. You make it big enough to hold several dozen at a time, and they will just keep coming.

I don't know if I believe it or not.

Perhaps you make the area with 2 'bump' gates.. that is.. they go thru the first one, then the 2nd one.. that way. one coming in doesn't let another charge out.

I use either cattle or hog welded wire panels. it's tough stuff.. wire is almost 'pencil' sized. I prefer to use wood posts. but in a pinch have used metal t-post for sides.. not corners.. etc..

Pigs are extremely intelligent and strong. I have heard stories of them kicking dirt at electric fencing until it shorted out in a spot and then they went through it. Sounds like the raptors of Jurrasic Park, lol! Mine is in chain link, but I think hog panels generally work well, too.

Generally, just seeing the pig keeps people out of the back yard. Most people are scared of him. He does look kind of scary with those tusks, but he's actually a big weenie.

I try to not keep pigs in chain link.. though i know that some people do, with no issues. The one time i had a pig in chain link, she put her 'rooter' into the chain link, made an oval motion with her head, and then walked thru the pig sized hole in the chain link she had just made. This all took about .25 seconds... and the pig was about.. oh.. 25-35# at the time..

Once my father sold old sows, one jumped off the truck's loading ramp, fell on its back and head, screamed and left off. As soon as my parents, neighbor and the truck driver came close, it took off screaming again. It ran about a kilometer into the bush, they have driven it back to the farmyard and locked it up with two old gates. The pig trader first emptied his truck and came back later that afternoon, when the sow was calmed. Then it was easy to load her up.

another time a weaner broke loose and ploughed up our neighbors turf... luckily we could catch it and tramp the sods back before our neighbor noticed.. When we told him what happened, he could take it, because the worst damage was already undone before he noticed.. ;)

Years past I knew a guy that had an expression that he used frequently.
"Is a pigs tail pork?" Any of you ever heard that one?:)
