Kubota B21
I'm looking to buy a small used backhoe/loader, a local Kubota dealer has a used B21 model with 1950 hr's on it, I don't know the age but looks like a early model, it runs and drives good, the backhoe is pretty tight, but the paint is pretty faded, it's a little rusty in spots, some of the hyd. hoses are starting to crack badly on the outer covering exposing the braiding and the tires have about 50/60% tread left, they have installed a new backhoe bucket in it too, I guess the old one wore out. They are asking $10,000 for it, think thats a fair price?

First, before you commit yourself; find out the history of it's ownership, and maintenance records would be nice too. If it spent it early life in a rental yard like many did, I would walk! If you are good with wrenches, and have the time to spare for repairs, it could be worth while? If the HST has been abused, you will find the replacements parts pricey and challenging to repair? It sounds like it had a tough life with no TLC? Also type in tractorhouse.com for comparable pricing for tractors under 40 hp. There should be several B21's listed on consignment nation wide to give you a ball park value; and pictures are available too! Good Luck!!

Thanks for the tip, I just looked at tractorhouse and they have one listed in my same state (Alabama) that looks to be in a little better shape and has 1500 hr's on it for $12,500 so I guess my local dealer has it priced about right? I am good with wrenches and have been a machinist for 20+ years so I can do my own work if it needed anything fixed. I didn't ask while I was there but do dealers usually give any warranty on used equipment?

$10K for a B21TLB that's is good running condition would normally be a very good value. Maybe a "steal".
We have several 06,07 models starting at $19K
Good luck and
Happy Friday,
Steve

If you plan to use it for anything other than backhoe/loader work make sure the 3pt hitch parts are still with the tractor. The parts have storage mounts built into the frame on the clutch side of the tractor. A replacement set will cost over $700.

About a year ago now, a member here bought a B21 that had previous repairs done to the HST. The workmanship was poor, resulting in another complete replacement of the HST housing, and many internal parts! You may search in parts/repairs here, and find the detailed pictures and breakdowns of the complete rebuild of the tractor too! He is a very talented craftsman, and included all the details with pictures of the complete disassembly of the B21.

I doubt if any warranty would apply; but I would test the tractor for cylinder leaks on the BH including the lift cylinders there. Then do the same with the loader, plus checking all the fluids for color and quanity.

Check the engine compartment for any overheating of the radiator for rust! Kubota engines are top quality, and there shouldn't be any leaks anywhere! If it shows the neglect you mentioned; give it a good workout if able? I think this would give you confidence for the purchase?
