John Deere 420 garden tractor
Last weekend, a buddy and me decided to trade tractors, I had an old Kubota B6000 4wd with a blade on the front. He had an old Cub Cadet 982 with all the extras that has sat in the back of his garage for almost 3 years as he uses his 782d diesel cub all the time. He has an almost 1500ft driveway to clear and he gets up near 200+ inches of snow each year. So we swapped tractors and we are both happy. Truth be told I am a dyed in the wool IH fan and been so since growing up on the farm. When I got the Kubota, the better half said that I wouldn't be happy till I had another red cub in the shed. This 982 has a healthy Onan P48G 19.9 hp power plant, Rear 2000rpm PTO, Catagory 0 3pt hitch and the front hyd outlet options already installed. All of those are high doller items to find and purchase if you dont have them. I plan to add power steering this summer that later Cub Cadet super garden tractors had. The ag tires on the back are brand new goodyears that have never seen a furrow yet, even the rims are brand new cub cadet. It took me about 3 hours to find all the parts for it around his basement garage and put the 982 back together. With a couple squirts of starting fluid she fired right up using a new battery. He stablized the gas, but its almost 3 years old and doesnt smell or look the best. I will dump that and put fresh gas and some MMO in the tank to help clean the carb and lube the top end. I do plan to pull the Onan appart and do a quick rering and replace the failure prone rods with the updated replacements from Onan. I put all my sleeve hitch implements up for sale and will be getting a catagory 0 Brinly moldboard plow soon. Cheers Mike and Michele T

I have been on an IH of one form or another since I could reach the clutch. A friend and I both ran a small engine repair shop and mowing service out of his garage. I ran a IH built Cub Cadet model 72 at first, then a 149 with hyd lift later on. Since moving to PA state I have had several different models, I restored a couple Originals, 71, 72, and a 882 diesel. I have tired the other green brand but keep coming back to IH and thier cubs. I always wanted a red 82 series. I picked up a dead 682 from my workplace, but traded it for a Yanmar compact. That left me wanting another red cub again. When a buddy who despritaly needed a 4wd compact to plow his drive came to mind. I offered to trade him even up and he took me up on the offer. I am already deep into getting this 982 back in top form. I have a better dash console bezel on the way, and the hard to find chrome, red and black IH emblem for between the headlights. I still need to wire up the rear lights, rear pto and deal with missing a missing safety switch that prevents the front pto clutch from working. It used to go to the seat, but I cant even find the wiring to the switch itself. I just need to locate the harness and hard wire it permantly (disclaimer, I dont advocate removing safety switches) but I have more common sense than others and always shut down the pto and throttle down to idle before leaving the operating position. Cheers Mike

Great history! I have a little red in my blood as well. Grew up in an IH Scout (around '66 model). My parents got it at an IH ag dealer so I got to crawl around all the tractors and such. I'm sure the Scout was in for service frequently as I recall many trips, each with a handfull of brochures to study. Here's a couple of shots of history for you...

I want to find a late 50's IH 2wd pickup truck and restore it as a daily driver. Get one with the inline 6 cylinder in it, bare bones and basic, something any shade tree mechanic can fix with basic tools. I hate this newer computer controled stuff. Mike

Great tractor! And I'm a Deere guy. For what it's worth, you don't need to sell all your sleeve hitch stuff as there is an adaptwer availabe for your 3 point that will allow you to use the sleeve hitch attachments. I see them on Ebay all the time for around $100 +/-.

I know about the adapter, but all my implements look quite small behind this monster, and I never use them. The only implement I use is the moldboard plow. I will have enough funds now that most of the implements are sold to purchase the plow. My wife and I plan to get the big pto driven tiller later this spring when funds allow. I will need that to put in our garden at the new house. They way the garden is positioned, you cant put it in with a plow, the garden is bordered on one side and one end by a chain link fence, and there isnt enough turn around room at the other for a tractor. Basicly have to back into the garden and till from one end to the other, than crank the wheel, back up to the beginning and make another pass, working from the back to the front of the garden. From talking to one of the dealers of used cub cadet stuff I know, the tiller will set me back somewhere between $400 and $600 bucks depending on condition. I cant wait to take this beast to a plow day this spring!! Cheers Mike
