I wanted to review the new Miller Diverson Tig 180. We got this new Tig back in August and it has impressed me. I have welding 1/8 Aluminum Plate with ease. The 180 is a major upgrade from the Diverson 165. The machine is great for a beginner big welder because it has all the settings preset for the operator.

A couple of things I don't care for on the diversion: You cant change the torch to something like a foot control. The post flow is ridiculously long. 30 seconds of post flow is a waste of gas. No pulse, No slope.. No wave balance control, No Hz adjustment, No stick welding, Other than that it is a fair entry level unit but there are many AC/DC tigs that are full featured for the same cost. Not meaning to bash your tig unit but it is what it is. If you could adjust wave balance and Hz, you could do much heavier Aluminum than having it all pre set. just sayin..

According to the specs, the 180 is pretty much the same except puts out 15 amps more than the 165. It is an inverter and quite compact which is good but personally I'd spend a little more and get something like a Lincoln square 225 TIG/stick machine. Miller is coming out with some new TIG machines but I don't know if they have anything in the price range of the lincoln? Lincoln also has a square wave 175 TIG/stick(might be upgraded to a 180). The lincoln's are a conventional machine but are more versatile than the Diversion. 180 amps is enough to burn a really hot 5/32" 7018 on thick steel. With the Diversion, you don't have that option.

If you just need a TIG machine, a Diversion is a good beginner choice for thinner material including aluminum. Everlast and Longevity probably have TIG machines with more features for the same or less money but unfortunately service and parts down the road may not be as easy as with a Miller or Lincoln. This is a concern for a lot of people. If you are happy with your purchase is the most important thing and it sounds like you are. Enjoy your new machine and happy welding!
