The original post started in the Photo Forum a few months ago chronicling the development of the birth of 7 puppies by my dog Molly... If you were following that thread, you will remember the little black, tan, & grey pup. Here is a link to that thread.. (click here)
I have received PM's and e Mails from people asking how they were doing and how many were any left. I am happy to say that 6 of the 7 have found homes and that the 7th one, the one in most of the pictures is still at home with us. We were not planning on keeping a puppy, but circumstances were such that I couldn't sell a sickly puppy, nor would I give it away to be a burden on someone else. We have named her Chloe, aka Monkey Face, Squirt, or Sprout (remember the Green Giant?) depending on who is calling her and what name comes to mind. She hasn't grown much in the past weeks and now she weighs 4 1/2 pounds... all the rest of the puppies weigh about 7 - 10 pounds. She has difficulty keeping food down for very long and it appears that her liver is the problem. The vets believe that the blood vessel that is supposed to go through the liver has an additional vessel that is bypassing some of the blood around the liver and that it is causing a toxicity problem. Until she gains enough size and strength, there isn't much that can be done. Right now, this is a supposition as to what the problem is after other things have been ruled out. Surgery is the only answer if this is in fact the root of the problem. If it is the problem, and it isn't fixed, then she might start to convulse when she gets older as a result of the toxins in her blood. I am not sure how this is going to work out, because this is a very rare problem that my veterinarian has only seen one other time in 30 years. Right now, it is a wait and see how she develops situation. I won't put her to sleep unless it is absolutely necessary and nothing can be done..... and only then after her life quality is diminished. She is a tough little dog when it comes to playing with her mom and Starr, the Weimeraner ..... she doesn't back away from anything.. Here is a picture of her.... she was sleeping in the fold of a carpet scrap under my desk. When I can't find her, this has become the first place to look and this is where she usually is.. I held the piece up with my shoe and snapped the picture before she woke..
