If I were you I would take a look at let’sdig18 on YouTube and see his video that all but broke YouTube of him recovering someone’s oops when dredging a pond he got over 6 million views on it as of a few weeks ago
Something that size (your pond project), you'll want some power and speed. So bigger bucket, bigger finger, and deeper reach = full size excavator. You could be done in a couple days with the right size machine, then use your tractor to move the pile of spoils. Getting too small of machine means you might spend what it costs for the big one on rental and be into it for a lot more time.
Getting a D6 dozer delivered to my place and picked up is like $300 from Ziegler. At some point, that's going to happen. The delivery rates weren't nearly as bad as I was expecting when I inquired about bigger equipment.
This is exactly what my neighbor did. He had a friend of mine dig with his excavator and my neighbor and I moved the dirt with the tractors. It took weeks to move the dirt but we got it done. Do yourself a favor and plan on renting a pump as well. If you don't keep ground water out while you are digging, it becomes very hard to dig deep.
Hire yourself a qualified operator with a D4 or greater Cat. Dozer. I say qualified because a qualified operator doesn't move the dozer if it isn't moving dirt. You won't be sorry! I had the bright idea of digging my own once.....40+ years ago......................I need to dig out my pond, its about 100 feet by 100 feet when full of water in winter it gets smaller in summer. I want to make it bigger and deeper maybe as deep as 20 feet on one side. The side I want to dig has no water now. So ill be starting with a dry ground. Should I buy or rent, what size should I get and about how much would it cost me to buy one used?
The question is how many weeks will you need it ? Most people do not buy unless they’re going to use it a fair amount. You incur a lot of costs to buy and then sell... plus drop in value and depreciation. If I’m understanding your project right then you should rent in my opinionI need to dig out my pond, its about 100 feet by 100 feet when full of water in winter it gets smaller in summer.
