I would tap the spool to see of it moves. If it moves in and the spring doesn't push it back than you have to take more apart to get the spool out on the other side.

If you use some sort of soft metal as a punch as you tap the spool you probably wont damage it.

Is there some way to use hydraulic pressure to push the spool out on the port of 46 (from opposite site)?

Other than starting it up and seeing if pushing the pedal would push the spool out - but it seems pretty well stuck in there. The end of the spool has internal threads I could put a bolt in and try to pull the spool out. Ill give it some taps Sat and see what happens. Thanks for the help!

SUCCESS!!!! I tapped on it and it went in a little ways but wouldn't budge when I tried to pull it out -- so I made a puller (see pic attached). Luckily the inside of the end of the spool is threaded. Once I got it out, I cleaned it off (wasn't dirty) and didn't see any scars - couple ares a little shinier than others - dunked it in hydraulic fluid and put it back in - it was stubborn and had to use the puller to work it in and out but after a few strokes it moved freely. Put it back together and boom swing/boom deflection works as it should!
Thanks so much BertZegers and Kthompson (and everyone else) for all the help - I learned alot about this machine and hydraulics. Not too difficult and luckily I could access one side of the valve - great design. Hoping there are no other problems/damage related to this.

the spool will be chromed then ground, the block is cast iron, I have seen a bit of rust do this, it gets on the cast and the spool will be frozen in place, with a bit of movement back and forth it will free up, the rust does not show on the chrome surface, glad its working as it should

That sounds like what I had going on laurencen. The boom deflection isn't used very often so maybe some water got in there or ?? Maybe i'll change out the hydro fluid to be safe?? Prev owner said he did the 50 and 250 hour maint....

Well seems it needs preventive USE. So have fun with the preventive work. lol Congratulations.

Reading this thread reminds me that I should use the boom cylinder now and then so it doesn't "freeze" up on me. I never use mine.

Seriously, hand tools and machines rust when resting. Using either keeps enough lubricant moving and being spilled onto or oily hand handling the wrenches to keep them in great shape.
