After looking at the full size rock grapples for excavators, I made this little toy to save my wife's back. She has the artist eye for everything from using a paint brush on canvas to building rock walls.

I had our shop modify a Northern Equipment 32" Jaw opening large logging grapple to this Rock grapple so that while I am on the backhoe she can direct me to pick up this or that rock from the pile and then I will place it near where she wants it, then before it is finally placed she can rotate it int place to suit her.

Just imagine the Sears vaccum in the picture is the rock.
Honey get me another beer! This is hard work.
It won't be long before she will be one on the hoe directing me I should think.

Nice Mike. I missed this post. I'd like to see some pictures of it in action. Any chance of that?

The best buddy I ever had was a black lab.

Yup

Bubba was a Rotti/Pit-Bull/Lab Mix (4/14/06) and Ziggy was a genetic freak of a super lab who was going strong @ 14 in 2004. I wonder if he is still around?

How do you like the thumb on your backhoe?

If I were to do it again I would go Hydraulic thumb. A mechanical thumb is worth it and better than none, but I am not a good enough hoe operator not to get frustrated finding the machine or thumb to always seeming to be in the wrong position.

I like that I have something to pinch against beside the dipper stick when the thumb is folded. Less beating up on the Hoe.
