Just got in from mowing some pretty heavy bush with the belly mower. Parked it and noticed oil running on the ground from the rear. I assume a plug type cover was missing just above the rear pto shaft. It is about 1 1/2"- 2" round and covers what I assume is a bearing to the pto. Is this something my dealer can replace in a day or two? Why would it have come off? Broken snap ring I assume? What oil have I lost? It was getting dark when I came in and have not been able to inspect much.

Just caught your post before signing off. I looked in the parts book I have and what you describe directly above the PTO shaft is a cap seal. From the pic it looks like a freeze plug in an engine. It is part #0834 0072 100
It has no snap clip to hold it and appears to be tapped into place. Check with your dealer. It may just be that, a plug tapped into place. If it is missing you may see a snap ring and a bearing in there that supports the PTO internal shaft that drives the external PTO shaft.
If you PM me I can E mail a pic to you
