Yes, after checking - you are correct. They are in SD. As you can see - I've seldom ventured to the east out of WA. Still the question remains - are these two things one and the same.
I have spent some time hunting in the Missouri Breaks area of Montana. I don't think the Bad Lands are considered a part of the Missouri Breaks. I may be wrong. Hopefully someone from that area will kick in with a definitive answer.
I looked up the Breaks. I thought it was a movie until now. It appears that they lie soley in Montana. The pictures looked nothing like the badlands. It said they are in a remote part of Montana. The Badlands can be seen from the interstate. We went through part of it and decided it probably wasn't a good idea to continue on so we got back on the interstate. The rock formations look a whole lot different also. They are located east of Mount Rushmore.
The only extended road trip I've ever been on - outside WA - we took a wrong turn and for about four hours we were completley lost on some remote "wagon trails" in the Badlands. It had been raining and it was very difficult - even in 4WD - to keep the pickup going in a straight line. I've never seen "dirt" turn into something so slick & greasy. We got directions from a "local indigenous inhabitant" and finally ended up near Wall Drugs. I was completely flabbergasted when I stepped out of the pickup and tried to walk in that goop. We finally did make it to our destination - Omaha, NE.
Thanks for your responses - I wasn't really able to make a determination from my look-see on a couple web sites.
We spent two weeks exploring Wyoming southern Montana and South Dakota. There was two places that worried me. One was the Big Horn Mountains and the other was the Badlands..I new that wasn't a place for greenhorns. Going across the Big Horns the gps tried to route us down some dirt roads. It was snowing with 2" on the ground. There were places where the wooden guardrail was knocked down and cows standing in the road. 7 hrs and about 300 miles from Cody to Sheridan. I am fascinated with that country. From Rock Springs Wy up to the Bear Tooth mt range and over to Sheridan I wished I could have stayed there
