I decided to run the bush hog today since it had dried up a bit, and I had a bunch of trash around some black walnut trees that I'd cleared vines from. Seemed to have made all the mistakes. Guess you develop a check list for this after doing it a while.
I took off the drawbar and soil ripper bar attached to it. No sweat there, as I'd removed the chisel plows in preparation for putting the disc hillers onto the bar.
Several mistakes made:
o Had run the idle speed down to 1,000 set point after 1st oil change. Can't engage bush hog without killing engine at that speed. Gotta remember to rev it to about 1,300 rpm or so. Killed it twice.
o PTO came loose and ran forward and gouged a little bit of paint from the inside of the left rear wheel rim. Tractor was pointed slightly downhill and to the left. Gotta remember to push and pull the PTO when putting it on to be sure it's locked in place.
o Going down my trail that slopes slightly left, the left side of the 3 ph rubbed on the inner part of the left tire. I didn't get the turnbuckles properly tightened. No damage done. The part rubbing was smooth, and tires are new like the tractor. Those suckers have to be TIGHT to not let the bush hog swing.
o Got back and found that the front of the hog wasn't quite level. Didn't level it out.
I'm still learning. Used the Gravely hog yesterday on some small stuff on a new trail bypass. This today had some stuff too big for the Gravely, plus it was several trees to clear out underneath them. Would have taken longer with the Gravely.
Oh, some brush ripped off my little pocket watch holder that I had attached to the hand hold of the JD. Will walk around down there tomorrow to see if I can find it.
I'm still learning.
