I decided to run the bush hog today since it had dried up a bit, and I had a bunch of trash around some black walnut trees that I'd cleared vines from. Seemed to have made all the mistakes. Guess you develop a check list for this after doing it a while.

I took off the drawbar and soil ripper bar attached to it. No sweat there, as I'd removed the chisel plows in preparation for putting the disc hillers onto the bar.

Several mistakes made:

o Had run the idle speed down to 1,000 set point after 1st oil change. Can't engage bush hog without killing engine at that speed. Gotta remember to rev it to about 1,300 rpm or so. Killed it twice.
o PTO came loose and ran forward and gouged a little bit of paint from the inside of the left rear wheel rim. Tractor was pointed slightly downhill and to the left. Gotta remember to push and pull the PTO when putting it on to be sure it's locked in place.
o Going down my trail that slopes slightly left, the left side of the 3 ph rubbed on the inner part of the left tire. I didn't get the turnbuckles properly tightened. No damage done. The part rubbing was smooth, and tires are new like the tractor. Those suckers have to be TIGHT to not let the bush hog swing.
o Got back and found that the front of the hog wasn't quite level. Didn't level it out.

I'm still learning. Used the Gravely hog yesterday on some small stuff on a new trail bypass. This today had some stuff too big for the Gravely, plus it was several trees to clear out underneath them. Would have taken longer with the Gravely.

Oh, some brush ripped off my little pocket watch holder that I had attached to the hand hold of the JD. Will walk around down there tomorrow to see if I can find it.

I'm still learning.

I was brush hogging last year and had my driveway alert walkie-talkie clipped onto the ROPS around where the hinge is. You can hear it very well with it at ear level. The sound that came from my brush hog left no mistake where it had gotten knocked off to /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I hope you have better luck with your watch.
I had my tilt meter on my old tractor knocked off, too and I suspect when I get my lights done they'll take a few hits as well.

I guess the thing to learn is that if you have to duck or move around in the seat to avoid getting whacked yourself, then you better expect something on your tractor is going to take a beating.

You should have heard the racket when my hog sucked up a 20 ft logging chain last year /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif After a bit of work and cursing I had a decent logging chain though. Just keep learning and try not to repeat tha same mistakes. Above all be careful and keep alert, I would but I lost my lert /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Ralph we all make those mistakes and the ones that learn from them don't get hurt. Be careful out there especially with that brush hog.

I found the watch holder in clearing some of the big stuff left lying around the trees.

Another thing I picked up was a flat on a front tire. Will write this one up separately.

Some brush yanked the dipstick out of my Gravely's Kohler engine during some early uses of it. Learned to turn the dipstick around towards the engine after checking the oil. Gravelys don't have side shields like on bigger tractor engines. This is one of the uses of them, to keep dipsticks from being yanked away. Sprayed oil all over the place before I figured it out.

Ralph - I got tired (and scared) of getting hit with flying wood chunks, so made expanded metal screen for my ROPS. The clincher was when I heard the story of the guy who had a spear go completely through his chest (from the back)- fun to Bush Hog, but can be hazardous too. Pic attached.
