First timer looking for a tractor. Have been looking at Yanmars, but a dealer has these two available and is recommending them over the Yanmars he has on his lot. Both are 4WD.

Dealer wants $5,126 for the Mitsu, which has 900 hours, $3,900 for the Satoh, with only 151 hours.

Anyone have comments on either model: reliability, suitability for use with loader, parts availability, whether these are good prices or anything else a novice should be aware of?

I'm not familiar with either model, but I paid $4600 for a Mitsu D1800 (18 hp pto) with a tiller. It has a 1 liter 2 cylinder diesel engine and has done just about everything I've wanted to do. I bought some used implements at auctions and am able to haul logs for firewood, grade the driveway, plow and cultivate my wife's garden, and cut the brush under the electric right of way. I love it, it's a better tractor than my Dad's 8N Ford. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Both are 4 cylinder models. The 2201 is a flatter deck model than the Satoh. What are you using the tractor for? Hours mean almost nothing. Either one could be a great tractor or complete pile. Parts are about the same for either. The 2040 is a Mitsu 2050. Since they both have strengths and weaknesses it is important to know what you need it to do and then what you want it to do.

Thanks for the advice. I bought the Mitsu with a Yanmar tiller, Koyker 110 FEL, 4' bush hog and 5' box scraper. I've only used the FEL and the tiller so far, but it seems to work great.

Buy the Mitsu 2201~!!!!
You'll be glad you did. As a dealer, I have been VERY happy with the MT 2201's. THey have treated my customers VERY well and in the process. THey have done the same for me. The other reason besides the fact that the MT's are just a nicer all around tracor,, it is extremely unlikely for the other unit to only have a hundred and some odd hours. Unless it is a fully reconditioned tractor that the hour meter was rolled back or replaced on. It is too old, unless it was just never used, if it was just never used you REALLY don't want it. All the seals will be dry or rotted from sitting. And after a short while you will start seeing all sorts of leaks and sepages. At the same time, the likeliness of only having a hundred and some hours is extremely slim, and makes me wonder at the truthfulness or integrity of the seller. Since it is more likely that that older Satoh has more like a thousand and some odd hours. Which really isn't that big of a deal,,, it takes a diesel about 1000 hours to break in and if it's well cared for and kept out of the weather should last a good 9-13 K hours... but the honesty of the seller would turn me personally away from buying ANYTHING from him.
