I purchased the MMM Mulch kit with my BX2200. The dealer delivered it with the mulch kit on with the "flatter" mowing blades. I looked in the book to see, but it doesn't say which is which.

One set of blades has some rear pitch to it--the other is flat.

I'm not sure which set is for mulching and which is non-mulch. I think the pitched blades would throw the grass more, but with the mulch shield on, I figure that would cut it more as it was spinning around.

Can anyone clarify please?

THKS,
Ron

RR,
Can't say for sure. I checked out the mulch kit for my 60" MMM & was put off by the price, something over $300, I think. However, to answer your question - - on my Craftsman, the mulching blades have some pitch to them in places. The idea is to add lift to the grass cuttings inside the mower deck & allow the blades to chop again & again.

The mulch kit won't work right without the mulching blades. You can tell these by the extra "hump" in them, which is also sharpened. Your dealer should be able to ID them by part number. My dealer had a hard time finding the correct part # for them.
I also removed the "flap" on the deck, as it is blocked completely by the mulch kit anyway. Fits between my trees better that way.
Good move on the mulch kit, say goodbye to clippings! (as long as you stay on top of mowing and don't mow wet grass)

Well, I went out and crawled under the MMM today. Guess I should have done that first. Here's what I found.

The flatter blades that came on my MMM (with mulch kit installed) do have the cutting edge sharpened nearly back to the hub. The other blades had the traditional sharp edge and have a the flipped up rear part.

I'm not using the MMM to cut my lawn, and will be doing some hired out work, so I want to put the non-mulch blades on. I took the Mulch kit off at delivery, but wasn't sure about the blades, and running out of time, left them.

My dealer is good, so I should have known he set it up correctly....

What would be the effect of using mulching blades without the rest of the mulching kit??? Would they cut the same, better, or worse?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My dealer said that the blades will not wok riht without the kit, and after looking at it, I can see why.
The kit basically makes the area where the clippings fly around much smaller, which chops them up finer, working with the extra sharpened surface area of the mulching blades.
I let the dealer talk me out of this kit when I bought the tractor and added it later.
Even though it does not do as well in tall or wet grass, I sure don't miss those darned clippings! Worst case scenario I mow slower when the grass is long or wet or both.
Well worth the $$$! (unless of course you have a PTO driven vacuum/chipper/shredder)

Out of ignorance, I used the mulch blades without the kit on my lawn. Seemed to work great! My guess is the other blades will toss the clippings more...............

Will let you know after I switch..
