Will a rear finish mower do as nice a job as a MMM? better? worse? Need to get something and cost is an issue. Right now I have about 1 acre to mow and I sure don't want to push mow it.

Same... you wouldn't know the difference... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

3-Point Finish mowers will be considerably less $$$ than proprietary mid-mount mowers... You can still use the 3-Pt mower on any tractor if you decide to upgrade... Not so with a "specialized" mm mower...

/w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif Have you considered a lower cost (under $1000.) riding lawn mower... like Craftsman or similar...?

I have a 60" MMM and love it and wouldn't change a thing in my situation.
Here's a few things my dealer brought to my attention:
1, A rear mower don't show your tire tracks.
2. A MMM is under the belly of the tractor and eaiser to watch.
3. A rear mower is easier/faster to hookup.
4. It's easier to mow close to objects with a MMM because of a tighter turning radius (the MMM is under you tractor and not behind your tractor where you have to drive past objects).
5. What do you use the tractor for bewteen mowing?

Both will do a great job, but it's Coke vs Pepsi.

The only concerns that we hear from our customers, is the need for removal of the MMM when switching to some rear 3 point mount ground engage implements--seems it is a little bit of a pain in the ???. Bo is right on the money in regard to the positive aspects of a MMM.--Usually about double the dollars versus the 3 point mowers--Ken Sweet

For sure, you can't tell the difference on the finished product except for the lack of tire prints with the rear mower. I mow about 2 acres weekly in the summer. I have a small Kubota that I use for that and the mmm was getting pretty shabby. I picked up a 3pt and it is every bit as good. Easier to drop off for other chores.

Tell us more about the 1 acre. Lots of obstacles or wide open field?

More obstacles: find a way to pay for the MMM.

Relatively wide open: save your money & get the RFM.

I've had both, for my tree filled property, I prefer the MMM. Both cut excellent (land pride RFM, New Holland MMM).

FYI if you don't like clippings blowing out the side, you can get rear discharge in a RFM, only New Holland has this for a MMM. You could get a Mulching kit for your Deere if you plan to mow regularly in the spring.

The best value for your dollar, with very good mowing results, is a rear discharge 3pt mower. For 1 acre, I'd kind of agree with the post re. a "garden tractor" or similar, with a 48" or larger deck - a lot less expensive than a compact tractor.

I like my rear mower because I can back it down into ditches, and I can back it under trees. If you don't have situations like trees the ROPS won't fit under, or the ditches, it may be a toss up except for the points like easier attachment and interchangablility between tractors that others have mentioned. Oh, one other advantage of the rear mower is that if you have really deep grass or weeds, say in a garden you haven't worked for a while, you can mow with it raised up a foot or so and mow down the high stuff without risking hitting something nasty on the ground.

Disadvantage is that you always have to remember you have something big sticking way out the back, and plan your turns accordingly. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

IF COST IS AN ISSUE THEN THE 3 PT IS THE WAY TO GO. another opton is to get a smaller riding lawn tractor, i use a craftsamn 18 hp garden tractor for mowing my regular lawn and the b2400 with rear finish mower for the larger open areas. i woul imagine the 3 pt. is easier to install and unhook. mine goes on and off in 3 min.. w3ll actually comes off in 3 min. and 4 min to hook up.

As long as you do not have an obstacle course in your yard (lots of trees/rocks/bushes/other land ornaments to turn around and avoid), a rear mower is alright
