Introducing the once-a-year oil change. New Mobil 1 Annual Protection ultimate full synthetic motor oils feature breakthrough lubricant technology that provides protection for one year between oil changes or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first guaranteed.?

I'll continue to change the oil in my vehicles at 3k miles just because it's worked for half a century so why risk it. I'm doubtful that the miracle formulations change things all that much ..... but then again I'm surprised by the spark plugs that have lasted 150k miles without a burp. I bought a new set two years ago to have on standby and it looks like I'll never need them.

20,000 ??? WOW. I'm on pins and needles running 7,000 with Mobil 1. Would be nice, but I'll wait for the reviews. I am still surprised how clean it looks at 7,000 tho.

Lots of things have changed with engine technology. The mentality that you can only get 100k out of an engine before it needs to be rebuilt Is outdated. 3k oil changes are a complete waste of money but it yours and do with it as you see fit.

I agree with Rusty. 3000 mile oil changes even back in the flower child days was a gimmick passed thru by the oil change shops. If I recall correctly and I believe I do, Ford cars and truck in the 70's only required oil changes every 6000 miles back then and oils in the 70's were no where near the quality of todays synthetic oil.
I don't even keep up with the mileage between changes anymore on my vehicles. All of them have oil life monitors and I change when the computer tells me it has not more than 10% oil life left. The GM dealer told me that the oil life monitor is programed for using standard oil and if you use full synthetic, you could likely reset it and go another round and be safe. I checked the first time and it was around 7000 miles when it got to 15% and over a year so I changed it. I did use regular oil for many years, but the last 6 years, I have used nothing but Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic and I put it in everything I own, boat, motorcycle, lawnmower, tractors and automobiles.

I only have to keep in stock one oil which is 10W40. I really don't believe that any engine is built so tight that it needs 0W30 weight to operate as some manufacturers suggest. Most of that hype is so they can squeeze another MPG out of their engines to meet the new EPA requirements. In the summer heat we have here at 100F ambient, I prefer to use a little thicker oil. I haven't had an engine related failure in any of my cars, trucks or other vehicles.

i do use Mobil 1 and go 10,000 miles between oil changes but I also change the filter every 5000 miles.

I have used Mobil 1 oil in my 2005 Ford Five Hundred since day one and have changed the oil and filter every 5k miles. I now have 282k on the car and plan to do the same exact thing on my next car when I decide I need a new car. My oil is very black when I change it (not that this tells you much), and I don't feel like I have wasted any money at all. That being said, 20k seems like an awfully long time to go. Too much for me to do it anyways...

Looking clean and being good are two different things. A Used Oil Analysis (UAO) report will tell. Trust but verify.

I don't know how much oil your Five Hundred takes but it's probably less than the 15 quarts (~$75) my 2002 Ford 7.3 takes. I ran my 7.3 18,000 miles getting good Used Oil Analysis reports. Then I dropped a small tree on my back, had great back pain, and had the dealer change the oil. He used dino oil.

I'm going back to T6 and will try for 20,000.

I agree with Rusty. 3000 mile oil changes even back in the flower child days was a gimmick passed thru by the oil change shops.

I would disagree. I would change the oil in the 70 Nova SS or the 75 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup or any other vehicle of the 70s or before , Fords included, and the oil would come out black and like water because the viscosity had broke down. (SE grade oil) 3K oil changes were needed back then unless you did only highway driving and were very soft on the gas pedal. I can remember checking the oil in the Nova about 500 miles after I changed it and it was already pretty dark. It was a big surprise when I checked the oil on my 1991 GMC Sonoma at 1K miles and it was still the same color as it went in.

You can't compare today with back then as the oil is leaps and bounds better, the engines are leaps and bounds better. I think the oil change shops rumor is an old wives tale.

I don't change my oil at 3K for any of the modern things I own, they are much longer. If I was going to push it out more I would oil sample so I would know based on my specific motor (they are not all the same) and my specific type of environment (idle much? long or short trips, dusty conditions or clean, light or heavy loads) so I would know what works best for me.

In fact that is what I am doing now, my motorcycle manual says I should change my oil at much longer intervals and a little over half way I can feel the shifting degrading and getting really clunky. I am doing oil samples to find out when I should. Not based on some marketing guess so the manufacture can sell more vehicles, or engineering estimation based on some generic conditions, or someone trying to keep the green people happy. It will be based on data for my specific set of conditions.
