I agree with Rusty. 3000 mile oil changes even back in the flower child days was a gimmick passed thru by the oil change shops. If I recall correctly and I believe I do, Ford cars and truck in the 70's only required oil changes every 6000 miles back then and oils in the 70's were no where near the quality of todays synthetic oil.
I don't even keep up with the mileage between changes anymore on my vehicles. All of them have oil life monitors and I change when the computer tells me it has not more than 10% oil life left. The GM dealer told me that the oil life monitor is programed for using standard oil and if you use full synthetic, you could likely reset it and go another round and be safe. I checked the first time and it was around 7000 miles when it got to 15% and over a year so I changed it. I did use regular oil for many years, but the last 6 years, I have used nothing but Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic and I put it in everything I own, boat, motorcycle, lawnmower, tractors and automobiles.
I only have to keep in stock one oil which is 10W40. I really don't believe that any engine is built so tight that it needs 0W30 weight to operate as some manufacturers suggest. Most of that hype is so they can squeeze another MPG out of their engines to meet the new EPA requirements. In the summer heat we have here at 100F ambient, I prefer to use a little thicker oil. I haven't had an engine related failure in any of my cars, trucks or other vehicles.
