Mobil 1 oil

Mike,

That's all great information, except that it doesn't take into account that engine oil analysis is a continuum from break-in, to early life, to mid life, to end life.

I guess what I'd really like to see is a comparison of several identical engines done with different oils and comparison betwixt and between. Possibly switching oils on each engine every change to see what affect that has.

BTW - I don't know what TBN is (other than TractByNet /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif).

Glue Guy ---The info I posted was done in the same engine with XX amount of miles. I really don’t care about break-in, to early life, to mid life, to end life! The first 12,000 miles (+/- 1,000) are the “break-in”. After the engine breaks in why do I care about mid life of end life? Once it breaks in, the metal rates in PPM should be very constant. If not, some part within engine is not running correctly.

The Mobil 1 was installed at 3,000 miles after letting old oil drain over night. I installed Amsoil oil at around 6,000 miles on motor. I then drained the Amsoil at 5 months with around 10,500 miles on oil. I had Amsoil in there for over 3X Mobil 1 service life and Amsoil tested better! This is not a slam toward Mobil 1. I just used it in my particular application it performed poorly!

Also you can’t compare as you stated, “I guess what I'd really like to see is a comparison of several identical engines done with different oils and comparison betwixt and between. Possibly switching oils on each engine every change to see what affect that has.”

This is not a good practice to do because all engines are made differently. With all the tolerances (position, grinding, micro finish and heat) there are not two engines had 100% the same. For example, I could have a BX2200 made on a Friday and it tested great in oil analysis. Then you could have the same tractor made on the same day right after mine and the tests could be 180 degrees different! They might be close but not the same.

Lastly, if you want to do the oil tests go right ahead. I did mine and that’s it. I don’ t want to keep mixing oils through the engine life. Some oils don’t like other oils.

The TBN is the Total Base Number. It is important because this number goes down when the oil starts to get acid in it. High TBN is good and TBN low is bad. Everyone has to find what drain interval is good for their particular application. I tested un-used Amsoil as my baseline and went from there. I have gone almost 14,000 miles on the same oil; however, I change the regular oil filters every 7,000 miles. That’s is it, no bypass either. Runs like new baby!!!! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Thanks

My point exactly. A test on one engine is not a test per say. You only have one data point. Unless you get repeatability with several engines, you don't know what the real trend is.

Glue- They should be close in readings if both engines are running at 100%

Thanks

Re: Mobil 1 oil (buttinski!))

I promise to "shut-up" on this smiley-face topic as soon as I appease my guilty-conscience /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif .

Somehow I missed Del's correction of my "parenthesis" error,... and then proceeded to jump-on the group for not-correcting me.

Duh! Think I'll go back under my rock for awhile, ...then come back and start over, when I'M "awake".

("conscience appeasement" didn't work,... still embarrassed! GRRR! /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif )

Be careful resting under that rock...you may get injured when TresCrows moves it with his BX!

(if my memory of who was moving the monster rock is correct)
