My other thread got nasty and was closed, so I was left to do some research outside of TBN but figured I'd give ya'll another chance :) I came across Mobil 5w40 turbo diesel synthetic and was wondering if anyone uses it or has had it analyzed. I wouldn't be so concerned if I did not have the 6.0 powerstroke, which from other research thru here and other places is an engine that really needs special attention when it comes to oil.

I've been using Mobil 1, 15w-50 in my NH TC48DA. I started my tractor up one morning when it was about 15 degrees F. It had been plugged in (block heater) for about 75 minutes. The tractor started right up, and ran as if it was summer time. The oil light on the dash flashed for about a picosecond. I didn't like that. So I bought some Mobil 1 5w-40 diesel synthetic oil. I'm going to use a gallon of that, along with a gallon of Mobil 1 15w-50. That should give me better cold starts, and great protection. With the ultra low diesel fuel, I feel that the TBN (total base number) is not as important as it was 20 years ago. I try and change it every 125-150 hours. I always use a dealer NH filter also. The dealer sells them cheaper than any off brand filter. I also have read that the NH filters have synthetic filter medium. Suppose to be a high quality filter. :)

is Mobil 1 15/50 diesel rated, and are you sure it's recommended to personally custom blend 2 different grades even if it's all Mobil? just asking bb

I switched my 1715 over to 5w 40 this fall and yet to use the block heater.
The wife use to sell oil and pushed me to using it.
We also use both of our private rigs on syn oil with no problems starting.:D

I'd been using the Mobil 1 5w40 "suv" oil in our 1983 240D but switched to 0w30 Mobil 1 when it came out. Best I could determine, the 0w30 gave about 1 mpg better fuel economy.

The oil sold by the dealer for our new VW TDI is 5w30 Castrol SLX. When it goes off warranty in 2 1/2 years, think I'll look around for the Mobil 1 ESP and hopefully get it in 0w30.

Unless you're in the really deep south, I can't see the need for xxw40. I've been using 5w30 in my 4010 until the 0w30 came out. Now it runs with the Mobil 1 0w30.

From what the shop manager says at the Ford dealer I use, the most important thing you can do for your 6.0 or 6.4 is change the oil earlier than what the factory recommends. The 6.0 uses oil to operate the injectors so it benefits from fresh oil. The 6.4 will have fuel in the oil from regenerations. It also benefits from fresh oil. You're in Louisiana so I'd recommend doing more frequent (4000 mile) oil changes and not worry much about using synthetic, although the synthetic wont hurt your engine.

DeereFan, I use Mobil 5/40 diesel synthetic in my 2009 GMC Duramax and it does fine. I switched from Rotella dino oil to this. I have not had an opportunity to do an oil analysis but can comment on the following. The engine definitely starts easier (though it has never been difficult) in cold weather. My perception is that it runs a bit more quiet when cold, but that is highly subjective. I have not been able to tell any difference in operating temps or in fuel economy to date--and I drive most days a fairly consistent route. The engine does not use oil either more or less with synthetic v. my prior conventional. I use synthetic oil mainly because I believe it to perform better (again, highly subjective) at temperature extremes and provide 25-50% longer change intervals within the safety window, and I can afford its increased cost. I must admit, however, that I cannot attest that for the average driver of one of these trucks much--if any--difference can be told. Having been a user of both dino and synthetic oil in several diesel trucks so far, I can say anecdotally that I have not been able to tell any difference in fuel economy or performance I can perceive by going with synthetic unless one is in those temp and service extremes noted. Mobil diesel syn is good oil, but one has to personally decide whether it is worth 50% more money for probably 1-2% more performance. Honestly, in my opinion changing a conventional oil at the prescribed intervals probably would do as well for most of us as going with full synthetic and practicing long drain intervals.

I run M1 15w-50 in my VW diesel. Never a problem. The car has 465,000 miles on it.

No, I'm not worried.

I agree with this 100%. Being the owner of 2 6.0's I use Dyno 15W40. I am not sure I would use anything other than the recommend oil since the injectors are hydraulically operated via engine oil. If it causes a issue it will get expensive really quick.

The Mobil One is approved by ford for the 6.0. I've been running it since my truck had 17k on it. I've had good results so far, but it's hard to find sometimes and usually a few bucks more than the rotella syn.

Matt;)
