My mom has a 210782 and she tells me the variable speed or ta doesn't work also only 3rd gear and reverse work. Looking for possible causes. I live 20 hrs away so have to troubleshoot over the phone.

sounds like it needs new drive belts and a variator adjustment. The manual explains how to do it. Follow it to the "T."

Ok so it is a belt drive she wasn't sure. Do you think a grandma can change them. Where can she download a manual. Also she mows alot of side hill so which model was first for pressurized oil system

unless your mom is mechanically savvy, I'd suggest taking it to a reputable small engine repair shop or back to the Deere dealership. It's not super difficult, but attention to detail is key and it's surely somewhat labor intensive. The deck will need to come off, and it will be easier with the wheel off. I'd recommend a transmission service while you're at it. The 210 isn't pressurized, but it should be OK up to 15 deg.

Thanks looks like I will b making a road trip. Is there a way to figure what year it is for getting parts

Year isn't necessary to know. All that is needed is the model and serial number.

Check with your local dealer or JDParts.com.

Only working in 3rd gear is an indication the variable speed sheave assembly needs attention and that selection is the only selector position both belts have enough tension to function. It could be that it just needs to be cleaned so the center portion slides with ease.

Chances are, the belts are toast and the variator is slipping. New belts and an adjustment should make it run fine for another 10 years.

I think you are getting misled a tad bit here.

Possibly the variator center section is sticking and not moving back and forth. A small bit of well placed light oil or WD-40 could help. Just avoid getting oil on the pulley sides or the belts will slip from that oil slick.

What concerns me more is that only 3rd gear and reverse work, and 1st and 2nd apparently not. That indicates a problem in the tranny, not in the variator.

Changing those belts is no picnic, but I doubt the belts really need changing. I wouldn't buy any until after a close inspection and diagnosis of tranny and belts.

Here is a schematic with part numbers, showing the sheaves and the belts.
