Hello, I am new here and was hopeing somebody could help me out. I have a mid 90's cub model 2160 with the 16hp briggs. The problem I am having is that when I engage the blades it stalls the engine. This is with full rpm. The clutch has been replaced before. How can I tell if the clutch is bad? I took it apart to look at it. Is there supposed to be friction material on the surface or is it just metal to metal?

Thank you --- Love the site!!

I've had this happen on our 3204 when the tractor is cold, and one year when I forgot to re-attach one plug wire.

First, make sure both cylinders are running. I know this sounds silly, but the tractor will start and run surprisingly smooth with one cylinder firing, then when you put load on it there isn't enough power. Then, with key off and out of the ignition, make sure the blades are spinning easy and free by turning them by hand. Next, with tractor at full throttle toggle the pto switch on just for a second to begin spinning the blades, toggle it off, then quickly toggle it on again to "feather" the blades up to speed. I've had to do this, and once running the deck cuts fine and the pto will re-start fine with no problem.

Are the bearing on the mower deck free and not froze up?

Yes, the deck turns freely. Is there any test to do on the pto?

Take the PTO belt that runs to the deck off and try engaging the PTO with this off. If it runs fine then PTO is working fine. Another thing to look at , is the safety switch under the seat still hooked up? If it still is, disconnect the plug and put a jumper wire from one side of the plug to the other side. My old 2160 would shut off or shake like crazy when I tried turning on the PTO. Replaced both PTO and PTO switch to have it still shutting off while engaging PTO. Put a jumper wire on seat safety switch and works like a champ now. Only thing is with the jumper wire in switch the tractor won't shut off if you try getting off the tractor with PTO still engaged. If this is a problem for you just get a new switch for under the seat. hope this works for you.

Well I went out today and took the deck off to check it out. The blades do spin. But just how freely should they spin? If I spin it by hand it goes maybe a quarter turn and stops. Is this too tight? Can these be rebuilt or do I have to buy the whole assembly?

Thanks for your help.
