I have a JD 4200, Problem is tractor dies when put in gear. Had a problem with the safety under the seat so I wired direct, tied wires together,(bypassing it). Didn't change anything, wires together or apart no difference. Had this problem once before and unplugged the seat safety switch and that fixed the problem then but not now.
Thanks for any help on this.

Joe, still sounds like its the seat safety switch. Wiring problems can drive you crazy.I guess its a possibility that the wire is grounding out somewhere else and causing the tractor to stall when placed in gear. Maybe try tracing the wiring and look for worn or pinched wires. Have you checked all the fuses?

Sincerely, Dirt

In addition to the seat switch, the 4200 also has a neutral safety switch. You don't specify whether your tractor is a gear or hydro version. If it is a hydro, look for a switch on the HST pedal mechanism. I am less familiar with the gear tractors, but I think the switch is either on the transmission, or on the Forward/Reverse shifter mechanism (if it has one).

Thanks,Dirt and RodgerH <pulled the wires off the pressure switch under the seat, wired them together, still dies, left them apart, still dies (when pushing in clutch and placing in forward or reverse)Tractor will start with circuit open or closed. Tractor has safety switch on transmission. when unplugged will not crank to start.
Thanks for your help

Joe, try this. Start your tractor. Now get off the seat. Does it die? If it does then maybe we need to look else where. From what you are saying the seat switch is working okay. Could it be the transmission switch? Try jumping it with a wire and see what happens then. If the tranmission and seat switch are both jumped and it still stalls when placed in gear..................I don't know where to go from there. The only other saftey switch would be on the pto. That's the trouble with electrical problems, they are sometimes tough to find and solve. They get real agrivating too! Good luck and keep us informed of what you find out.

Sincerely, Dirt
