Model 59 snowblower

I have this snowblower mounted on a 955 and tried it for the first time last night. I am a little disappointed in its performance, specifically throwing ability, but am not sure if this is normal. I was using it in fine snow and it would only throw the snow only about 10 feet at operationg rpm. It did lug the motor down once I found some heavier snow but still did not throw it any farther. Any ideas?

How many inches of snow did you have on the ground. Were you running the PTO at the rated 540 RPM? Is this blower a single stage or 2 stage? What Make is this blower? You told us it was a model 59. How were the shutes adjusted?

Ekvallcr - I've got a JD 59" snowblower on a JD 790 (30 hp) and it easily throws "dry" snow 20' (with chute facing downwind). Distance is somewhat less with "wet" heavy and deep snow.

I use "Pam" cooking spray on the housing, impellers and chute and run at full rated PTO speed. I'm not familiar with a 955, but perhaps the mid PTO is working at different RPM's? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Specs for a JD 790 or 4310 show Mid PTO 2100 RPM. It this the same for the 955?

Thanks for the pictures. I used it again last night and it does appear to be throwing snow about the same distance as the pictures. I think the fine snow conditions caused additional snow dust and it was hard to see the true distance. Although, I will still try that Pam trick.

Hey Ekvallcr,

East Bethel--we can't be too far from each other. I'm in Oak Grove. I've seen other guys from MN on this site, but none as close as you. Are you in town (does East Bethel actually have a town)??. I'm assuming with a 955 you're on some acreage.

Well, East Bethel is more of a township than a town. We are off of Cty. 22 and close to Coon Lake. We just bought an old farm from the relatives with about 43 acres. The tractor is more than I need, but that's why you buy toys. lol...

I've fished Coon Lake a couple of times. We are like you in the sense that Oak Grove is a township as well. We are a couple miles west of 65 and north of 221st (just north of you). The only part of East Bethel that resembles a town is the small grouping of business and the East Bethel Theater.

Did you purchase the tractor from Isanti County Equipment?

I bought my tractor from a guy in Princeton. It needs some TLC but that could be said for everything I buy. My previous tractor was a JD 420, so this is a big jump for me. I still have my JD 140 that I'll use for mowing around the house and the 955 will be for everything else.

Here are a couple of pictures of my 955 with the 59 blower working a couple of years ago. You can see it sends out quite a plume. I recommend you try opening up the deflector to the widest position to see what that does. I always used it wide open. Run the tractor throttle wide open. That makes the PTO just slightly faster than 540 RPM, but it is not enough overspeed to worry about.
