I have been lurking here for a few weeks, but would now like your advice in what is required for my needs.

I have 13 acres. About 10 acres of pine trees were just logged with the pines being about 15" in diameter (16 truckloads of trees, so it was not as dense as you might be imagining). My terrain is basically flat, but since the land was once a farm, the edges of the property slope down a little.

In the short term I would like to push some of the logging debris into better burning piles than they left it. I would also like to dig out the stumps so I want a backhoe, but my wife may try to talk me into grinding them. Then I would be grooming the ground to later wind up with a large pasture-like yard, so a box scrape is probably needed. A FEL with a toothbar is definitely required.

In the long term I am probably wanting a belly mower and perhaps a rotary cutter for the grass and any heavier work.

I have not been to a dealer yet (I've drooled on the fence when they are closed though). I started thinking about the TC35DA or TC40DA and then when seeing them questioned if they were too large. So then TC29DA or TC33DA are also possibilities, but I don't know if their smaller frame is an advantage or disadvantage for my needs.

I read your posts about the NH subframe BH conflicting with a belly mower on the 35/40. Is that also a problem for the 29/33? Woods makes a good looking backhoe which supposedly would not have a conflict.

Sorry this has been long, but I appreciate your thoughts.

Greg

I almost forgot, I will be doing some road maintenance in the future and could always find BH digging projects that would save my 51 year old back.

The TC35/40 would suit you just fine. Gear or hydro. I would seriously consider a rear mount finish mower to ease the strain on that 51 year old back. Their is a great picture of a TC35 with a Woods Ground Breaker hoe on the attachments forum. I believe it is under "Tricked out tractor", or something to that effect. With the work you are planning, I would get the larger framed TC 35/40 tractor. The FEL is much more powerful than the smaller TC29/33 framed machines. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif A buddy has a mid mount mower on his TC30, and he says it's a real pain to remove.

Thanks IH3444. From your picture, you are a very distinguished man... er dog. THe RFM will be good if there aren't too many trees to dodge in the future (who knows what my wife will come up with for a yard design).

I would get the next size bigger than what you think you need if you are unfamiliar with them. I took this bit of advice from someone on this forum and it proved to be quiet correct. I have a 29 for 3 acres with some narrow strips around landscaping to mow- it is the perfect size, a 24 would have been way too small for my projects which include a lot of FEL and BH work. I would suggest at least a 35 for your lot.

Thanks Dale.
I was roaming around dealer lots while they were closed this afternoon and saw a Farmtrac 360DST with loader and backhoe and shuttle shift transmission. 39 horsepower (engine is Mitsubishi diesel) and strength on either bucket a little better than a similar NH model. The buckets don't have quite the range of motion of the NH. The dealer who was there though store was closed, said it was $23K. I've got a lot of studying to do.

Thanks Doc. I've been enjoying reading the threads. The custom build implements section is very motivating.

Greg, I agree with getting a little bigger than you think that you'll need. I love my TC30, but at times, I wish I had more hp for the pto and strength for the loader. I too am very impressed with the craftmanship of the folks here ( which is what hooked me to this forum )as well as the knowledge ( showing my lack of it because I think that I spelled it wrong ) that is displayed here. It seems as though everyone has something to contribute. I can't seem to stay away from this site too long due to a craving to see and read all the good stuff that's being shown or discussed. Enjoy, and let us know what you decide;.... with pictures of corse.

I agree about the coming back and reading everything stuff. This site is great. And I can't wait to leave a little sweat on a nice tractor. I guess I'll learn how to cast a fishing line with the pole attached to the BH bucket.
