mmadden2,

We need more information to give you any kind of specific response. I find it odd that you did not receive a manual from the dealer you bought this unit from, as you say, "new". You could try the internet for manuals on your specific mower.

Of course, you'd be better off with a manual, and sticking with info contained there. But, just about every mower gear box I've ever seen requires just enough oil to fill to cover the bearings on the input shaft. Drastically over-filling isn't good either. SLIGHTLY over filling is probably better than under filling. So long as the gears/bearings are running in oil, level isn't "life or death" critical within reason.

In all likelyhood, you'll want a 90wt gear oil.

I use a straight screw driver inserted through top fill plug to check oil level. (Use like a dip stick)

Madden,

Not Knowing any thing about that company it is hard to say specificaly what the manufacturer calls for. With that being said the old tried and true meathod for checking the gearbox always works. check your gearbox for a plug on the side of the box, it should be about 1/2 to 3/4 to the top, find a wrench to fit, SLOWLY start to remove plug. If gear oil starts to come out Gearbox should be good to go, however if you get the plug out and no oil comes out don't worry, just look inside the hole if you can see that the top of the oil is close to the hole you should be fine.

B E Lewis Farms,

I should have realized the OP had indicated the product in question. Looked up the unit's manual and like you have indicated the over flow plug is on the side and it does have a fill plug on top. Just curious, I wonder if there are any gear boxes for cutters made in the USA.
