OK, I'm another new guy, here goes....I just bought a 1210 with very low hours. The engine sings and I want to keep it that way. The lubrication list is 25 years old! So the first question is where do I get a modern lubrication list. The second question is about the "quality" of modern oils. The EPA has reduced the amount of zinc used in motor oils. Zinc is the antiwear stuff. The 1996 SH oils had 1300 PPM zinc. The 2005 SM oils have 870 PPM. So, for my application, the older oil is much better. Does anyone know of diesel engine oil with high levels of zinc? Are there better oils for my HST and front 4WD assembly? I'd very much prefer to run Mobile SCH634 (synthetic) in the front end. Any problems with that? This is my first HST so I don't even know what to ask about. I'm trying to avoid problems, not fix them, so I'm doing my worrying now. Thanks for any input.

Other guys will know the other answers but here's a separate answer you probably don't know.
I think your injector pump has a small screw on the top in which you add a few ounces of engine oil each time you change the oil. My 1310 and 2110 both did. Mine needed an 11/16 wrench and had a small copper washer under the bolt head. I made a long paper funnel to get the oil in.
In my case it was to lubricate the injector pump and was considered important.
Search ZDDP or zinc on this board and you'll be reading until next summer.

Sixdogs,
I don't see anything on my engine that matches your description. I have an owners manual and have ordered the Ford shop manual and will be on the lookout for any mention of lubricating the pump. Thanks. I'll search zinc and make a pot of coffee. What kind of dogs?

It's a "nut" looking thing with very short nut portion with a slot in the top. right behind the tubes that co into the injector. On top.
If you have one, don't lose the copper washer.

Springer spaniels. Despite trying otherwise, fate has handed us six of them, on and off, for the past 25 years. They do sort of grow on you.

If you want higher levels of zinc the easiest thing to do is not use S category only oils, find a C category oil. API CI-4 will have higher levels of ZDDP than the newer CJ-4. C category (Commercial) oils are designed for diesel engines and tend to have a much more robust additive package than S category (Service) oils designed for gasoline engines.

Don't mistake synthetic oils as meaning they are better than conventional based ones. The base oil is only one component of finished lubricant. The additive package can make up as much as 15-20% of a finished lubricating oil. High grade conventional oils can often outperform true pure synthetic oils because you can suspend more additives in a conventional base stock. Don't let marketing hype get you. The only real reason to use a pure synthetic oil is the higher viscosity index, which translates into it stays in viscosity range better (not thickening as much in the winter and thinning out as much in the summer).

S = Spark Ignition C = Compression Ignition. C rated oils are designed to meet the higher compressive forces in diesel engines.

Use an oil rated CI-4 or lower. Stay away from oils rated CJ-4. They should be used on on-road diesels model year 2008 and newer only. Do not use any oil with only an 'S' rating in a diesel.

S = Spark Ignition C = Compression Ignition. C rated oils are designed to meet the higher compressive forces in diesel engines.

It may be easier to remember that way but it is the API's abbreviation for S = Service and C = Commercial
