Rotary Cutter Modern vs. John Deere 6' cutter

RollingFarms,
I use IMatch so that sets it back a couple of inches, so my pto shaft fit with out trimming. Sounds like the dealer did not trim the shafts to fit your tractor, I check all new pto powered implements when I hook them up initially, with an MX6 you need to lower the hitch fully and raise the tail wheel high to make sure you still have clearance on the shaft. The flexing hitch has to be taken into consideration.

I've owned a BushHog RZ60 for about 5 years and it's been a good mower. Mowed mostly pasture grass. bjr

Even though we have a MX7 and really love it on the 300+ acres we far. I have sold a lot of used Modern cutters and they are also tough. Small Dealer network is a minus for them. We can get parts for Modern, if anyone needs them? Ken Sweet

the deck thickness of the MX6 is good, that's not my problem. it's the strength of the hitch on it and the long pto shaft. the pto shaft is way too long in my opinion and when you raise up the cutter it binds it up, hence bending it. it has a slide feature, which at first i thought was kind of neat, just slide it up to attatch to the tractor pto. the probelm i have found with this is there's no need to slide the pto shaft 3-4 inches, why not just make the pto shaft shorter to begin with and give me 1 inch to have to slide. a local farmer friend of mine even commented to me about the pto shaft being too long. i contacted my dealer about this thinking that maybe they gave me the wrong pto shaft, nope it was the correct one they said. the bracing on the hitch is a joke! the deck maybe medium duty rated, but deffinatley not the bracing. cut quality is good, but that doesn't do a thing for me when my cutter is always down for repairs. if i had to do it over again i would just go buy either a Bush Hog brand mower or some cheap cutter and beat the mess out of it and not expect much from it. i wouldn't be as mad when it tore up that's for sure.

O.K., I have a problem with this. Not a flame but just have to point out some obvious (to me) discrepancies.

#1. Length or slide has little or nothing to do with strength. My 5 foot Bush Hog shaft prolly slides a foot or more. As long as there is enough male shaft inside female side (get your minds out of the gutter) the strength isn't effected. Either half is strong enough to handle the twisting force of tractors that it is intended to work with. HOWEVER extreme angles can cause binding and breakage,

#2. I had my son, a mechanical engineer, look at the 3 point hitches. Although all would be strong enough for me the MX6 was the strongest of all in the medium grade mowers and even the next step up of the Bush Hog brand.

I don't dispute your report of problems but I think your reasons for failure may be wrong. As far as problems with lifting too high, My tractor will lift attachments much higher than any tractor I have ever used before. It does put the shaft in a bind causing noise in the u joints. I could adjust the lift to stop this but so far I simply don't raise the mower that high. Problem solved. Sounds to me like you may have a lemon.
